Ok, first post in AIBU. I had an item that I put on freecycle. Got a lot of interest but went with the lady who seemed to be most appreciative of it. Fast forward a week and said item is now for sale on gumtree for a decent price!

AIBU to this this is out of order?

You'll have to put it down to experience - lots of people will try to tug on the heartstrings on Freecycle. I used to just let it go to the first reply, seemed much fairer that way.

hiddenhome · 22/08/2012 21:20

Probably, but it's up to her what she does with it I suppose. You should have put it on gumtree first perhaps?

Hassled · 22/08/2012 21:20

It does seem out of order but there's nothing you can do - there will always be some chancers out there. I can see why you're cross - I would be.

You're quite sure it's the same particular item?

chickenwingsmmmm · 22/08/2012 21:21

I don't think its the done thing. But yabu.
She could have many reasons for selling it. Once you give something away, you can't have a say in what happens.
I would stick to a first come first serve when posting on freecycle.

FuzzzyDuckosaurus · 22/08/2012 21:24

I could've put it on gumtree myself but I thought it better on freecycle as sort of 'repayment' for things ive received through freecycle IYSWIM?

Yes I'm, 99% sure it's the same. The location is what got me and she mentioned where she had came from when she came to collect. She took a few other things aswell, wonder how much she's making from them.. Hmm

cozietoesie · 22/08/2012 21:25

I'd be minded to contact your group organizers and alert them to the matter in case she has a consistent pattern of this behaviour. You need to be very sure it's the same item though.

Go and have a look at the house and say you regret letting something simillar go recently and was desperate to find it again as you realised you made a mistake. Grin

NovackNGood · 22/08/2012 21:29

It's what rag and bone men did for centuries.

cozietoesie · 22/08/2012 21:30

But everyone knew that's what rag and bone men did. The OP said she had a lot of interest - it could have gone to someone who needed it. Rather than (possibly) to someone who's looking to turn a fast buck.

Sparks1 · 22/08/2012 21:30

I have my own version of freecycle.

It's called appreciatecycle.

It involves giving to people i know and their friends / family etc.

Tends to cut out the scum that want to profit from peoples generosity and use of resources.

After to seeing some of the "requests" on there they'll never get a thing from me...

oopsi · 22/08/2012 21:31

freecycle isn't about you getting to act lady bountiful its about keeping stuff out of landfill

FuzzzyDuckosaurus · 22/08/2012 21:33

It's really knocked my faith in people who use freecycle.
Maybe I'll email and enquire about item, see if name/email matches up Grin

You wanted rid. You got rid.

FuzzzyDuckosaurus · 22/08/2012 21:34

Yes but not for someone to then make money on it!!

OP posts:
thepeoplesprincess · 22/08/2012 21:35

Pretend you want to buy it, and then go round and take it back.

ForFoxsGlacierMints · 22/08/2012 21:35

I think this thread is divided into those who would do the same thing and those who would not.

(I'm on the wouldn't team btw, poor show!)

FuzzzyDuckosaurus · 22/08/2012 21:36

That's an idea!

OP posts:
MrsKeithRichards · 22/08/2012 21:43

I wouldn't do it.

nokidshere · 22/08/2012 21:50

I wouldn;t do it myself but I am not bothered by other people who do. Once

rubbish stuff has gone from house I don't care what happens to it as long as its not my clutter anymore :)

hiddenhome · 22/08/2012 21:58

Life is too short to worry about this. Surely you could have sold it yourself or kept it if you were that worried about it. People lie and manipulate all the time, sometimes you get honest ones and sometimes you don't, it's just life. Just let it go and go on gumtree yourself in the future.
