To wonder WTF Nickelodeon are playing at?

My kids, God love 'em, are massively into "Big Time Rush". In case you haven't encountered this, it's a ludicrous Nickelodeon TV programme about four (I think) boys in a boy-band. Basically, the kind of programme that makes you want to eat your own head to escape. But they like it, so I let them watch a couple of episodes while I get some work done (I'm a freelancer).

Anyway. This afternoon, they were watching BTR, I was working, when I suddenly heard the BTR boys start singing a song that went as follows:

"You're such a turd,
Boy, you're such a turd,
You look just like a turd,
And you smell like a turd."

I honestly thought I must be mis-hearing, so I make DD rewind it. Nope, still hearing a song about how someone is such a turd. Then, just to really make ram the point home, the boys were suddenly standing around on a studio floor painted with this giant pink words - "You smell like a turd."

Meanwhile, DS is saying, "No, it's TURN, mummy. You smell like a TURN."

I'll happily admit the Turd song is not the only thing wrong with this programme. In fact, it may not even be the very worst thing that's wrong with this programme. But - a song called "You're such a turd"? In a kid's TV show? Srsly?

Or am I missing something, and the word "turd" is not rude any more?

Sounds like the sort of thing I would have loved as a child!

OutrageousFlavourLikeFreesias · 22/08/2012 20:29

The honest truth is, it's probably the only thing I've ever seen on this horrible, horrible programme I've ever found funny. "You look just like a turd, and you smell like a turd." I may or may not be laughing (now the kids are in bed).

But - isn't turd a Rude Word? Would they do a song called "You look just like a shit?"

Or have I misunderstood the linguistic value of the word "turd" and my kids are totally okay to sing the Turd Song in the playground?

I see the word "turd" as far less rude or offensive tbh.

DD quite likes BTR although not sure shes seen that one. Not one I've come across either. I'd probably roll my eyes and not much more though.

TallDwarf · 22/08/2012 20:35

Turd means poo where I'm from. It's not a nice word but it's not a swear word.

OutrageousFlavourLikeFreesias · 22/08/2012 20:39

"Turd" isn't a swear-word? Fair enough. In that case I humbly retract my objection and allow my kids to sing the Turd Song after all.

This is why I love MN. No matter how insane the parenting dilemma, someone will always be able to help you with it. :)

Thing is, in America, where the brain splittingly awful program is made, turd is no more offensive than poo. This is according to my American cousins, who I fb'd after going Shock Shock at the 'turd' song!

McHappyPants2012 · 22/08/2012 20:45

love it :)

OutrageousFlavourLikeFreesias · 22/08/2012 20:51

You know what - it's growing on me. Big Time Rush have finally done something entertaining.

I may have to sing this to clients when they annoy me. And then tell them it's not rude in America.

"You look like a turd, and you sme-e-e-e-ell like a tuuuurd..."

Ismeyes · 22/08/2012 21:31

A turd is just an inoffensive poo word in the UK too isn't it?!

LittleMoo6 · 22/08/2012 21:39

I'm about wetting myself laughing at that. What a ridiculous song to put on a programme. It's funny, but I wouldn't want my kids singing it. I think turd is just the wrong side of the line. Stuff like pants, bogeys, cowpat, even 'poo' are great for kids but turd just seems a bit grown up to me.

Of course now i've just got all the different names for turd going through my head... floater is the funniest Grin.

peedoffbird · 22/08/2012 21:40

While on the subject of Nickelodeon does anyone have an opinion on that Fred show? The boy with the high pitched screamy voice? I actually cannot cope with it and make dd turn it off. It makes me twitch and I have an uncontrollable desire to rush at the telly with a large knife screaming very bad words

Love iCarly and Victorious though!

Triggles · 22/08/2012 22:29

I imagine they hear much worse in school. Seriously? This WORRIES you? Hmm

SrirachaGirl · 22/08/2012 22:37

Horrible, just horrible...so rude stifles hysterical giggles in elbow and contemplates showing DCs who love this type of humour.
