to not like pirate dvds?

I had a friend try to sell me pirate DVDs today. I was quite surprised. She is a sensible person and must know this is against the law.

I wouldn't buy anything as I don't agree with it. I think it impacts on the film industry and I personally love to go to the cinema and wouldn't want cinemas to go under. Is pirating seen as a 'lesser crime' that people don't care about or am I just being precious and it doesn't really matter?

Of course it is a lesser crime

It's not like murder is it? I'd say it's prob the same level as shoplifting.

I d/l tv shows (because I hate waiting for shows from the us) but then I buy them anyway if I like them.

I don't do it with films but know plenty who do

By lesser crime I meant seen as less than stealing. Sorry I wasn't very clear.

I dl movies and tv shows. But I also buy DVDs cos i like to have them all lined up on my shelf. I don't feel at all bad about downloading. I would never buy pirated DVDs though as it funds organised crime and exploits vulnerable people in other countries. Also pirated DVDs would look shit on my shelf.

redyam · 19/08/2012 20:20

The bigger crime is your friend trying to sell something that isn't hers to begin with. Even worse that she is trying to sell it to you.

Pirate DVDs etc are usually streamed in to fund terrorism; its useful for money laundering, plus drugs and child trafficking cover.

The nice bloke down the road is the bottom of the food chain who doesnt know where the money i s being fed back.

I have bought pirates, BEFORE, I realised where the money went.

Ilovesunflowers · 19/08/2012 20:24

I never knew that Jumping.

Total rubbish. The guy will have downloaded it for free from the Internet to try and make some money for himself. It is still highly illegal.

Katienana · 19/08/2012 20:26

Yanbu, my husband works in the industry and I don't see why criminals should get the profit from his hard work and talent. illegal downloads are no better than dodgy dvds.

Kayano · 19/08/2012 20:27

I was going to say all you need is a good PC, the Internet and a DVD burner Confused

Ilovesunflowers · 19/08/2012 20:27

Have to say I agree with you Katienana.

Total rubbish

Really? I did 20 years in an anti-money laundering environment tracking the money involved in this sort of shit.

old link, but it is indicative of Triads, who do run most of the Pirate DVD rings in the UK

YABU. They are some of Johnny Depp's best work Wink

(come on, someone had to say it)

Kayano · 19/08/2012 20:40

But not all of them. Bloke in the office does them for himself. Not that anyone buys them. The moron even advertised them on the work internal forum Angry

AgentProvocateur · 19/08/2012 20:41

I think people who do this are utter scum. It's stealing pure and simple. I have friends in the film/music industry and I wouldn't buy pirated, and I'd find it hard to stay friends with someone who would, TBH.

MrsKeithRichards · 19/08/2012 20:41

It was, up until anyone with an internet connection could do it.

Apart from me obviously. Help!!
