Just come back from a good friends' wedding. Small main wedding (close family only) but big evening reception she held at home in her garden. about 100 there (brave but she has a big house and a big garden hog roast/buffet ). There was a "bar" set up in the utility room with a friend's older student daughters serving drinks. Bride had been to drinks wholesalers and bought cheap beer wine and cider and some soft drinks. Aibu to consider it a bit to be expected to pay for a drink? Apart from the fact she had no licence, this was in her home. She is not short of a bob or two either. Worse, her new dh was saying that they expect to make money on the bar!

Not nice at all, but 100 people can fairly pack away a fair lot of drink. Would've been nicer for everyone to put a few pound in a kitty - just a nominal amount to take the sting out of the drinks bill if necessary.

Even that would raise eyebrows, but it would be less cringey overall than charging for each drink

If you're having a party at your house and you can't afford to stump up the booze (fair enough) then you tell guests to bring their own.

Apart from it being illegal, I can't believe anyone would be so crass. They could have paid to have a pay bar if they'd have wanted to.
