When buying a house? The reason I am asking is that our home is on the market and our estate agents have told me that there are other 4 beds near to us for £10000 less. How near would you consider near when looking at homes for sale?

ho0w long is a piece of string?

a 4 bed from me would take me into shit hole less salubrious area in one direction, and 4 miles the other way would take me into the realms of lottery wins.

Iggly · 07/08/2012 19:06

Have they told you that because they think your place is overpriced?

Minshu · 07/08/2012 19:06

need to consider post codes and catchment areas, not distance from an arbitrary point.

thisisyesterday · 07/08/2012 19:09

well... how near are they?

right now i am looking for a house in a very specific area, but i guess anything within half a mile of my pinpointed spot would be good

salvatoresandwich · 07/08/2012 19:11

The area is neither good or bad. It does have the plus of a fantastic comp. The house is in 1850's stone detached cottage so lots of character. I have looked on right move for houses £10,000 less than ours which are 4 bed although there are none in our school catchment there are some in other districts. Am sooo confused lol.

As Jumping says it's string territory!
Depends - city, suburbia, town, village or rural - are all going to be very different. I've been looking in a 30min drive radius of my DH's possible new job. Which is a seriously big area but bits of it are crap (so are automatically out) and bits too expensive. I'm looking at the same kind of house but there's a huge variation in prices as it depends on other stuff not just bedroom numbers - garden, parking, living & kitchen space, layout, bathrooms, new verses period property. Room sizes etc.
For example 4bed houses in a 3mile radius (it won't do 4) of here :
£1million + www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/15036474?search_identifier=SI9T3W9a1xu0vhMMlXtR1A
Or just under £60k

It also depends on what your price range is.

One road, houses could range from 750K - 1.5mil. 100K would be small fry to people like that. It's in a completely crap secondary school are a as well!

amck5700 · 07/08/2012 19:22

It depends on how well people know an area. When we first moved to our current city we considered anything north side, so probably about 6 miles radius, now we know the area if we were to move, we probably have more specific requirements as in down to particular streets or estates.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 07/08/2012 19:46

I do 1 mile from the school postcode

WhereYouLeftIt · 07/08/2012 21:03

You could have two identical 4-bed houses, 50 yds between them. But one faces onto a fast-food outlet, and the other one is round the corner facing onto an open green space. I'd expect the latter to cost more.

Location is more than just a matter of distance from a particular point.
