Just told my MIL that my DS is starting ballet lessons soon and I was expecting a positive response. Instead I was met with 'ooh thats not very appropriate for our religion' (she's muslim)

I snapped back "why whats the issue with dancing?" The response, "dancing and singing are associated with prostitution"

He's just doing ballet lessons not selling his little body FFS! And she quite happily sits and watches Bollywood movies which seem to contain a lot of "prostitution" Who is being unreasonable?

Rant over - please don't flame me

Oh dear. Ignore, with the best will in the world. Are you Muslim and what does your Partner/Husband think?
I find this sort of attitude to young children just doing their thing i.e. dancing, moving about, singing all sorts of stuff just mind boggling. let her think what she wishes but do not for a minute let it curtail your child's freedom to move.

She is BU. No one in the Balkans seems to have a problem with it do they?

DeepPurple · 07/08/2012 17:18

She is bu. let him enjoy his dancing!

lolaflores · 07/08/2012 17:19

The Balkans?

greenbananas · 07/08/2012 17:24

Some Muslims do feel strongly about this. I am not Muslim, and don't know how much is cultural expectations rather than enshrined in actual religion.

I know a couple of Muslims who are very, very strict about dancing and singing. However, if your MIL watches Bollywood films, there would seem to be an element of hypocrisy in what she is saying.

In any case, I hope your DS enjoys his dancing classes.

Im not muslim and my husband is liberal. MIL is very odd in the fact that she had no problem (quite happy in fact) with us marrying but then she is so outrageously old fashioned in other parts of her religion. Ho hum, you can't choose your PILs ;-)

He's your child so you arrange for his interests outside the home scene and it's nothing to do with anyone else (except his father).

My 6 year old DD does ballet and tap and my 5 year old DS does modern dance, no sign of either of them going in to prostitution as yet, though I admit there is plenty of time.

YANBU your MIL IBU!

kirsty75005 · 07/08/2012 17:47

It's not only certain muslims. Parts of my extended family grew up in areas of Scotland where the wee frees were the dominant religion. A distant cousin tells me that the priest would turn his back on her whenever she passed him in the road because she played the accordeon. ?????.

danteV · 07/08/2012 17:49

Yanbu. However I am surprised that you were shocked at her response.
Modeling, dancing are seen by some cultures this way.

HeadfirstOverTheHighJump · 07/08/2012 17:52

"And she quite happily sits and watches Bollywood movies which seem to contain a lot of "prostitution""

Did you point this out to her? Yanbu!

SoleSource · 07/08/2012 17:57

MIL is a nutjob.
