One hundred and ten percent..!

AIBU that my skin crawls everytime I hear someone say 'one thousand percent', 'one hundred and ten percent' and all other impossible use of mathematical percentages...?

rookiemater · 05/08/2012 22:30

This winds me up senseless. Every single episode of the apprentice I had to be restrained from throwing bricks at the TV. Even my boss who is a highly intelligent man used the 110% remark.

100% IS AS HIGH AS YOU CAN GO

McHappyPants2012 · 05/08/2012 22:31

Yabu it means that you are extremely sure than what you are saying is correct

ThePieSmuggler · 05/08/2012 22:32

Ahhh, thank god it's not just me then! I quite often have to restrain myself from snapping back 'it's impossible to give more than 100% you muppet' Smile

Petsinmyolympicpudenda · 05/08/2012 22:32

I 1 million % agree!

LucieMay · 05/08/2012 22:32

11 out of ten etc similarly annoys me.

WorraLiberty · 05/08/2012 22:32

Lol it doesn't wind me up that much

But since rookie mentioned the apprentice....

It really winds me up when Alan asks who led the team and they all say "That was myself Lord Sugar"

Don't they ever use the word "ME" any more? Angry

ThePieSmuggler · 05/08/2012 22:33

McHappy - no, it means you have a very poor grasp of mathematics and have just demonstrated this to the person you're speaking to.

Depends on the context. It is quite possible for (say) a price to rise by 150%, but, yes, when people say they are 110% committed to something it's a crime against logic.

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 05/08/2012 22:35

It annoys me as well.

And the only time "11" is acceptable is in the context of This Is Spinal Tap.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/08/2012 22:35

It winds me up more when people don't acknowledge it's perfectly possible to have 110% in the correct context.

MrGeresHamster · 05/08/2012 22:37

LRD you have a valid point there, 110% can be plausible in certain situations... It's the rise of its incorrect use that winds me up!

OP posts:
ThreeWheelsGood · 05/08/2012 22:37

YANBU! it annoys me no end, especially when you're trying to fix in children's minds the concept of percentages. And "per cent" MEANS per hundred!

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 05/08/2012 22:39

I am of course discounting the use in the context described by ComeIntoTheGardenMaud Grin

tethersphotofinish · 05/08/2012 22:41

'Very unique' is the one that makes me want to do damage.

It's unique or it isn't; you cannot quantify it.

Yama · 05/08/2012 22:41

Okay, I can't check if this is the right clip as the sound isn't working on my laptop.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/08/2012 22:44

Oh, god, thank you SO MUCH for saying that tethers. It drives me bonkers. I tense up whenever I hear it.

I have heard it from people who I thought were really intelligent and it makes me want to murder them.

(overreaction? Me? Never!)

I've recently started hearing this horrible phrase: 's/he excels better than the others'.

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 05/08/2012 22:44

tethers - that sort of thing grinds my gears as well. Like how sport pundits talk about "pace". As in "The game had a lot of pace". What, slow pace? Fast pace? What sort of pace exactly?

Bossybritches22 · 05/08/2012 22:44

"New & improved" .......ONE OR THE OTHER FFS!!!

MrGeresHamster · 05/08/2012 22:44

Yama that is exactly it!

McHappyPants2012 · 05/08/2012 22:45

So how come figures like 2.4 babies are born per family can be given. To me you can not get a 0.6 of a person.

Some stats don't make sense

noelstudios · 05/08/2012 22:45

X-factor hasn't even started yet...

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/08/2012 22:46

mc - because it's an average?

McHappyPants2012 · 05/08/2012 22:47

Well 110% is above avarage lol

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 05/08/2012 22:48

To me you can not get a 0.6 of a person.

Well...you can...but I think it would be a bit messy.
