to think Im not responsible for pregnancy

Sometimes I walk a neighbours dog as a favour as I'm out with ds and the buggy so its an easy favour which I do for free. My neighbour likes it as it saves her a walk.

So last week I took the dog to the park and let her off the lead as neighbour told me to when the informal arrangement started a year or so ago. To my shock, a few minutes later, the dog was involved in some very unromantic relations, which neither I nor the other dog carer could stop...to make it worse a second male dog got involved.

I had no idea the dog I was walking was on heat or even not spayed. My neighbour is saying I am responsible for her dogs pregnancy. I think I'm not responsible, as she should have told me this may happen and then I would have kept the dog on the lead or not walked her in the first place. Aibu?

The dog you were walking was obviously a complete tart with no morals.

Poodle crosses are hugely in demand at the moment. But the ? over the other half might be a problem.

Nanny0gg · 04/08/2012 16:41

Surely you'll know who the father is when you see the puppies?

YANBU btw.

edam · 04/08/2012 16:42

Aw... bitch meets dog(s)

Your friend is a cheeky so-and-so and highly irresponsible not to have had her dog spayed.

TheVermiciousKnid · 04/08/2012 16:43

Hopefully there won't even be any puppies if the owner gets the dog to the vet now for an injection, and then gets her spayed.

Of course YANBU, OP.

Enfyshedd · 04/08/2012 16:44

YANBU - I didn't want my cat to have a litter because ExP & I both worked full time and we wouldn't have been able to cope with toilet training kittens, so I had her neutered as soon as possible after she first went into heat and didn't allow her outside unsupervised until it was done - 3 times in 6 weeks I was woken up for 4 nights running due to her yowling when she was in heat. Any responsible pet owner who doesn't want the responsibilty of a litter of babies should have the pet neutered.

Rikalaily · 04/08/2012 16:45

She should have had it spayed, or at least told you she was in heat.

Tell her to take the dog to the vets and get the mismate jab, if it's done early enough it's like the morning after pill.

Both dogs could be the father causing a mixed litter.

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 04/08/2012 17:30

YANBU. For the dog to be pregnant she must have been bleeding for around 2 weeks. Owner would have noticed this and should have the common sense to keep the dog inside in its fertile window, Or put something on it to prevent penetration.

YesIamYourSisterInLaw · 04/08/2012 18:17

You were doing her a favor so she shouldn't really moan. However i can't believe that you couldn't stop the second dog [hmmm]

YesIamYourSisterInLaw · 04/08/2012 18:18
Hmm
JennerOSity · 04/08/2012 18:21

well you aren't psychic are you! She needs to get a grip and stop blaming someone else for her own oversight and get her sorry backside down to the vets instead.

eurochick · 04/08/2012 18:33

She should have told you the dog was in season and should have kept indoors or made it clear she should be kept on the lead and watched carefully!

ratspeaker · 04/08/2012 18:40

a) she should have told you dog was on heat
b) a responsible owner would have had the dog neutered
c) If she's that lax at telling you about dog being in season can she be trusted to have it wormed etc? something you may want to consider around a small child
d) let her walk her own dog from now on

Paiviaso · 04/08/2012 19:03

YANBU, I can't believe they wouldn't mention something that important.

The owner should have the pregnancy terminated.

notsomanicnow · 04/08/2012 19:25

a litter of pups can be from two dog fathers...

Southwestwhippet · 04/08/2012 19:33

I don't think the owner should simply have told OP that the dog was on heat. The owner should not have been allowing her dog to be walked in the local park at all if it is in season. This is totally unfair to anyone in the park with a male dog as male dogs are almost incapable of not reacting to a bitch in heat whether it is on or off the lead.

The entire dog walking situation should not have been allowed to occur at all. Owner of the dog is extremely irresponsible. However the pregnancy can be terminated once the season has come to an end (most vets will not terminate before the end of the season in case the bitch is mated again).

The father is irrelevant you seem to get big bucks for anything with a doodle on the end. Just call them thingumydoodles and she can sell them for £800 a piece.

Or she can take responsibility for her dog, which she should have been doing in the first place Hmm

YANBU

JennerOSity · 05/08/2012 10:11

OP - what is the update - has the poodle owner backed down and become reasonable. Have you told stuck up for yourself and she has apologised and offered you a puppy for free? :)

bragmatic · 05/08/2012 10:49

YANBU. She should have told you the dog was a slut.
