to stop using conditioner

I've got rubbish dry dyed hair so lather on shit loads of conditioner every time I wash my hair and rinse well.

I ran out on Sunday and went for 3 days not using it. Hair felt smoother and looked more shiney. Today used conditioner again and it feel weighed down and feels crap.

Have I just been brain washed into the wash and condition routine when there's no need?

I use heat protection spray when straightening and a bit of wax stuff for texture but nothing else.

I use conditioner about once a week, and then only on the ends of my hair. If use it any more frequently, my hair gets greasy and dull.

WandaDoff · 01/08/2012 22:47

I tend to just use a bit of conditioner on the ends of my hair & only a small 50p size blob.
Anything more seems to weigh it down, I have dry ends & a greasy scalp though.

Stick with the wax stuff - saves time.

debka · 01/08/2012 22:48

I don't use shampoo, only conditioner! Only wash my hair about once or twice a week though... (masses of the stuff, long, curly, and thoroughly annoying).

ChitchatAtHome · 01/08/2012 22:49

Totally depends on your hair and the type of conditioner. If it's nice without conditioner, then leave it out. Mine would be a complete and utter tangled mess that would need to be cut off before I managed to get a comb though it if I hadn't put conditioner in it! But some brands (unrelated to price) are far too heavy and leave it feeling oily.

There's usually no reason to put conditioner on the hair near your scalp though, I only ever put it on the hair from the neckline down.

tethersphotofinish · 01/08/2012 22:50

I don't bother with conditioner.

Use about ten tonnes of hairspray, though.

dyzzidi · 01/08/2012 22:52

I very rarely use conditioner. To be honest though I rarely use any other hair products as my hair is very straight and dries quite nice naturally.

MrsKeithRichards · 01/08/2012 22:52

It feel fuzzy when dry without it but if I let it dry naturally then straighten it's lovely.

Maybe I've been using to much of the stuff.

I don't use shampoo and I only use conditioner that doesn't contain silicones. I wash my hair about once/twice a week and only use silicone free styling products.
I had a problem with dried bleached hair made worse because it is curly, now the frizz is reduced.
Look up curly girl technique ( I think it's called) it explains the problems with today's shampoos and how it drys hair

StuntGirl · 01/08/2012 23:02

If I don't use conditioner I can't even get the comb through my hair :(

CaliforniaLeaving · 02/08/2012 01:37

I use conditioner only as do many others on here there was me thinking I was all alone.
But I don't get greasy hair ever, no matter how long I go without doing a conditioner wash.
If your hair feels and looks better with just shampoo then just do the shampoo. If it works go for it.

Ecgwynn · 02/08/2012 08:04

I think conditioner eventually builds up in your hair (this could be bollocks).
My hair care tip of the week is to wash with washing up liquid every 6 months or so. It leaves the hair lovely and squeaky clean. Although probably strips all the oils off it.

MrsKeithRichards · 02/08/2012 08:21

I washed my hair with washing up liquid last year when I was stripping a colour out!

So I think I've been a mug all these years. I just remembered how nice lush shampoo bar used to leave my hair with no conditioner.

My hairdresser friend told me off for using conditioner every time I wash. Once a week is sufficient and only a small amount on the ends, never the scalp. Now I hardly ever remember to use it so my hair just gets shampood twice a week and gets left to dry naturally. No other products are used.

Dawndonna · 02/08/2012 10:48

I've not used it for years. I have shiny black and silver hair.

Trills · 02/08/2012 11:00

You are not Being Unreasonable to do whatever you like with your hair. What an odd question.

MadgeHarvey · 02/08/2012 11:01

trills post

usualsuspect · 02/08/2012 11:02

I only use it on the ends of my hair. I don't wash my hair every day though.
