With the neighbour?

It's a lovely sunny day here, very hot and so obviously all the windows are open. I was just settling down to do some work after lunch when I realised my room smelt like a petrol garage, as did the rest of the blinking house.

Neighbour, who has several 'classic' cars, was kindly revving his engine repeatedly in some sort of macho 'I'm fixing this' way. He stores this car on a shared drive, so obviously the fumes were filling up our house. I went out and politely told him so. He seemed a bit miffed but has stopped.

WIBU to ask him to stop? It was giving me a headache but I feel a bit guilty now. On the other hand, it's a pretty antisocial thing to do on such a nice day. I'm not very good at asking people to stop doing things, and now I have I feel very bad. Trivial problem of the week.

YANBU. I would have been pretty narked too.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 28/07/2012 13:57

Yanbu, don't worry about it. It was inconsiderate of your neighbour.

whackamole · 28/07/2012 13:58

YANBU. What a dick.

geegee888 · 28/07/2012 14:00

YANBU, on the basis that you don't want to die of carbon monoxide poisoning. YANBU also on the basis that you don't want to listen to some twat constantly revving his engine like a boy racer at the weekend.

I've had mild carbon monoxide poisoning from car fumes, and believe me, it makes you feel very, very ill, sick and headachy indeed.

BahHumPug · 28/07/2012 14:04

Ooo I didn't know that about carbon monoxide, interesting. Thanks!

He mumbled something about thinking we were away - I assume because the main car isn't on the drive - but 1 car missing does not mean an entire household of 5 is gone. Creepy man anyway.

OP posts:
thatisall · 28/07/2012 14:06

YANBU and he knows it lol

HeathRobinson · 28/07/2012 15:16

YANBU asking him to stop.
YABU for calling him a creepy man. Especially when he did stop when you asked him to.

RubyRosie · 28/07/2012 15:18

How do you know he's not a creepy man in other ways though Confused?

WorraLiberty · 28/07/2012 15:25

was kindly revving his engine repeatedly in some sort of macho 'I'm fixing this' way

Really? Sometimes you have to keep revving an engine when you're mending a car...depending on what's wrong with it.

I wonder if you would have assumed a woman was being 'macho' if she was mending hers? Grin

Still annoying though, especially when everyone has their windows open in the heat.

cuntflapwankbadger · 28/07/2012 15:32

YANBU.

Because I have a neighbour a couple of doors down who has a crappy old MX5 that they've done something to so it's very loud and deep - you know the type, it goes through you and shakes your windows and you can hear it no matter what. And for some reason, every night when they come home, they pull up and sit there revving the fucking thing for about ten minutes. Every night. It makes me murderous.

WMittens · 28/07/2012 15:48

YABU - you say he has several classic cars, so he is obviously passionate about them. It's his hobby, probably takes pleasure from tinkering with them, fixing them, polishing them, driving them, maybe just standing and looking at them with a cup of tea in his hand.

Now you've put a stop to that and he's not allowed to enjoy his hobby, his relaxation time that he's been looking forward to all week. And to top it off you're calling him 'creepy' behind his back.

Now if you don't mind, close your windows so I can go back to fixing my car.

Leena49 · 29/07/2012 04:37

I will swap you car enthusiast for miserable old lady with Barking dog.

Rowgtfc72 · 29/07/2012 08:24

Dh loves his car, as do I , and we show it too. He would never unneccesarily rev the engine (it drinks petrol and bits may fall off) but he does have to rev it to fix it sometimes. He would never fill the neighbours house with exhaust fumes though. It does have a nice deep rumble (2.5 ltr V6) and if he has an early start parks at the end of the street to minimise wake up calls . I doubt your neighbour realised it was being a problem so YANBU to have a word but maybe let him enjoy his hobby occasionally !

Howmanyteachersistoomany · 29/07/2012 08:40

So, it's the middle of the afternoon. The man likes to work at old cars. You seem a bit snippy about the arts, what with the classic in inverted commas. But I digress. It was saturday. Lunchtime. Not 3am. He was fixing his car. Outside. On his driveway. You could have shut your windows. Oh and sometimes you have to rev the car, depending on what's wrong. I can't really see what the man was doing wrong and if you'd asked me to stop I'd have said no. You don't say that it's an on- going problem, or that the man is generally inconsiderate.

AND he waited until he thought you'd gone away.

I really don't see what he did wrong. He was trying to be considerate - he waited til he thought you'd gone and stopped when you asked him. And now he can't enjoy his hobby. Outside. In the middle of the afternoon.

YABU. And I'm pissed off on the neighbours behalf.

twofingerstoGideon · 29/07/2012 08:42

You are lucky to have a neighbour who responded so positively. My neighbour's response would have been: oh goody, I've found something to piss off neighbour... and would do it on a regular basis.

She has already discovered:
(a) lighting the chiminea in her garden sets off at least three neighbours' smoke alarms
(b) leaving the engine of her 4x4 running for 5-10 minutes (why?) before going out to walk her (barking) dog at 7 a.m. every day wakes up several households
(c) Home cinema system annoys neighbours on both sides
She gets enormous pleasure from this apparently... so YABU. He stopped, didn't he?

twofingerstoGideon · 29/07/2012 08:45

Howmanyteachers
if you'd asked me to stop I'd have said no.
Glad I don't live next door to you. So it's okay to fill your neighbour's house with carbon monoxide fumes as long as you don't do it regularly? Lovely.

Howmanyteachersistoomany · 29/07/2012 08:55

I'd have said can't you shut your window I need to fix xyz I'll be 5/10 more minutes.

Howmanyteachersistoomany · 29/07/2012 08:56

If the op doesn't want the neighbour who SHARES HER DRIVE doing emmmm stuff that drives are for ON THE DRIVE then maybe look at a house without a shared drive next time?

MrsKeithRichards · 29/07/2012 09:04

Poor old dude. My dad's a tinkerer but bikes, not cars. I'd be mad if a cat bum neighbour like you complained.

You don't live in a detached house with 5 acres of land. Until you do you need to tolerate other people now and again. Not could have just shut your window for 5 minutes.

Kayano · 29/07/2012 09:09

Anti social to fix his car?

And he stopped when you asked?

Doesn't sound creepy or antisocial to me

Kayano · 29/07/2012 09:10

Two fingers he isn't filling the house with Rabin monoxide. The way you describe it you would think he hooked a hosepipe to his exhaust and put it through her window.

He is fixing his car
On the drive
Outside

Howmanyteachersistoomany · 29/07/2012 09:11

Good point kayano. Anti-social to fix his car on a nice sunny day. Obviously his car should only require repair when it's wet, cold, snowy, sleet. How are his car break down when the sun is out. Make the creepy fucker stand outside in unpleasant weather and suffer Hmm

Kayano · 29/07/2012 09:11

Rabin? Carbon*

Autocorrect fail

nancerama · 29/07/2012 09:12

YANBU to not want your house filling up with carbon monoxide, but YABU for not respecting your neighbour's right to indulge in his hobby outside his own house at the weekend. It's probably not something he could do in the pouring rain.

I think I'd be inclined to pop round, admire what he's doing and gently let him know that when he has the engines running you do get fumes in your house. If he wouldn't mind tipping you off when it's likely to happen, so that you can shut your windows it would be very much appreciated.

Howmanyteachersistoomany · 29/07/2012 09:13

Shut the windows?
