To go to work tomorrow and refuse outright to do these extra hours

Ok So I've been working for this food chain for the last 10 months, first job in many years of being a single parent, (2 years on jobseekers) i work my arse off and allways give 100% if not more, I know I am lucky to have any job at all and don't take it for granted.

Was told upon interview that i may have to a bit flexible, i said that's fine, I can do a few extra hours here and there but as I'm on tax credits I have to watch what I earn and I would like to be asked if I am avalible for those hours, I am also willing to swap my days if needed, I was taken on in october so when I imformed the tax credit people via phone that I was now working I upped my income to cover any extra hours work that they may need me to do over the xmas period.

Xmas has well come and gone, I do like my job but I am still being rotad for an extra 4 hours a week, I may get an odd week when i'm not but it has been pretty much consistant and I don't know what time or day till the rota goes up,

As i am only contracted to work two 8 hour days a week when I put a request in for holiday it is for day by day, I work Mondays and Fridays,

Went into work yestoday and checked the rota for the week I have a days holiday booked, I have booked the Friday as holiday, I am on it for the monday as expected but shouldnt be on it anymore that week untill the following monday when i do 1.30pm till 10pm shift. The rota says I am in My usual Monday shift but also tuesday 9-12 wendsday 9-1.30 and then thurs 2pm till 6pm,

I am so pissed off, I do not think it is fair that management can just rota you down to work these extra hours and then it is down to you to go and explain why you cannot do them. I am contracted to work for !.30 till 10pm monday and friday, any extra not only messes with my tax credits but also my housing benifit,

I would be gratefull if they would take me on full time as then i wouldn't need to claim anything but they won't unless you are managment or a supervisor.

I have stuff arranged for the week ive booked the friday off, Hence why I booked that day and not the week after. I didn't just want a day off, Now I have to go to managment and explain why I cant do it when I shouldnt be working anyway, sorry for the rant, just really fucked off.

Is your contract for 16hrs ...and originally was to be set as mondays and fridays with 2 x 8hrs on those days?
If thats your contract then thats what you should be rota'd in for every week...any other shifts must be requested and you have the choice to say no to them.
You will need to check the wording on your contract and then take this up with management...
Perhaps it has been misunderstood and as you have been doing extra times...they may be taking it for granted that you are ok with it to continue...I hope you get it sorted out...and they don't get difficult about things...keep cool and prof with them...and get any further agreements in writing too

Youre entirely within your rights to be fucked off, thats despicable behaviour. Very poor management on their part. Check the details but if you have a contract it should protect you from having to agree to it. Clearly you dont want to be without work but if you are able how about going for interviews on your day off? If you can find something else then either you'll be able to move on or at least prove to your current employer that you are able to and perhaps persuade them to get their act together

Thank you sooz, I will ask for a copy of my contract tomorrow as have never been given one, I do feel taken for granted but won't allow myself to be.

I will defo be not working those hours that week, I cannot book a full week off as I do not work a full week so when i book holdiay hours that I am entitled to I shouldnt have to worry about the other days lol

Thank you Niggle, something else pissed me off over my last days holiday I took, I asked for the friday (8 hours) but I spotted on the office rota which is a bit different to the canteen one we have that I was booked in for 6 hours holiday, when I questioned it the deputy manager ( store manager was away, had nothing to do with ut) he said that he knew I was worried about going over my 16 hours so he had knocked a couple of hours off of my holiday so i could do an extra 4 hours that week and it wouldn't go that much over my 16. now i think about it I'm getting more cross,

It does make you irate. I had similar issues in my first job. The final straw for me was I booked a days holiday onto a bank holiday weekend, to give myself a long weekend, and had four days holiday deducted instead of one. I lost my rag and handed in my notice the next day. Ive never regretted it. I had offered to work Xmas day for the fuckers and they do that grrr! Hope you get yours sorted out.
