Necklace on baby

firemansamisnormansdad · 09/07/2012 10:09

my brother has just posted up on facebook some photos of his 8 month old son. The baby is wearing a long bead necklace which goes down to his waist. AIBU to worry that this is a strangling hazard for a baby who is crawling around? It's not on for religious purposes - they're hippies. AIBU to say something or should I just stay out of it?

Amber teething necklace then? Daft as all get out in my view but I would still stay well out of it.

ElizabethPonsonby · 09/07/2012 10:11

Was it for a one off photo opportunity under supervision, or is this something the baby wears all day?

worriedwretch · 09/07/2012 10:11

Does he wear it all the time?

Hippy?

Probably a teething necklace.

UnChartered · 09/07/2012 10:13

is the necklace made of razor wire?

i'm sure you DBro will be looking out for your DNs safety

squeakytoy · 09/07/2012 10:14

YABU as others have said, unless the child is wandering around wearing this, which is unlikely.

firemansamisnormansdad · 09/07/2012 10:45

It was a casual shot, not a posed one. The beads are too small for a teething necklace. Not even talking about a choking hazard.

YABU and a bit assumptive, I think. It might look like a casual shot but you've got no idea about the context it was taken in.

LentillyFart · 09/07/2012 10:56

Have you discussed this with your brother or was the urge to splat it all over MN just too great? If you're that worried get on the phone first THEN tell us all about it ffs.

worldgonecrazy · 09/07/2012 10:59

If it goes down to the waist it's not an amber teething necklace - they're short enough that baby can't chew on the beads.

YABU to not phone your brother and express your concerns, or just bring it up gently in conversation.

valiumredhead · 09/07/2012 12:44

world how do they chew on them then? Confused

Catsmamma · 09/07/2012 12:48

are the mothers supposed to wear the teething necklace?? so that the baby can chew at it whilst never being put down

and yes...the amber teething necklaces are supposed to fit close, no dangling.

worldgonecrazy · 09/07/2012 13:00

There is supposed to be something in amber which is absorbed by the skin, helping soothe the pain of teething. The baby isn't supposed to chew on the beads - they don't work that way.

EndangeredOtter · 09/07/2012 13:05

Amber necklaces are a load of woo. The warmth of the body is not hot enough to release anything. Unless your babys body gets to 200 degrees?

As for the photo, I assume he only wears it under supervision and not in his sleep?

valiumredhead · 09/07/2012 13:29

Oh right - how odd, I always thought the babies chewed on them!

MrsRhettButler · 09/07/2012 13:33

Both mine wore/wear their dummies on a necklace. I take it off for bed and we don't lose any dummies :)

MrsRhettButler · 09/07/2012 13:34

I thought that too Valium
