To be irrationally cross about some drivers...

You know how it is. You come up behind a parked car. A car is coming towards you. There is room for only one of you to go through. You are stopped already to allow them through as they have the right of way and then what happens? They insist on stopping and flashing you to pull out and come through. What's that all about? I seem to be noticing it a lot lately. Is it some new fashion? So bloody irritating.

Maybe the obstruction is their side and feel it is only fair you have the right of way?

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 05/07/2012 22:10

Maybe they are trying to be nice?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/07/2012 22:14

They can see behind you someone else is coming and you'd best come through first or they'll come face to face with the other driver straightaway and have to reverse? (Depends what the set-up is but this happens a lot where we live so there's lots of giving way even when you technically have right of way.)

I agree they are probably trying to be nice, but can see why it's a bit pointless. Much better than the other way around though - people insisting on driving forwards then realizing there is nowhere to go when a tiny bit of forethought and waiting back in the wider bit of the road would have made life easier all round.

grimbletart · 05/07/2012 22:24

No Sole - I've said the obstruction i.e. the parked car, is on my side so they have the right of way.

Outraged: And how is it nice to see someone stop as they should to let you through because you have the right of way and then you insist on stopping and making you come through.

LRD: no I am not talking about that situation, which would be understandable and in that case I would be aware of it because I watch my mirror Wink.

I am talking about a normal narrow street/road, a parked car(s) in front of you, someone coming towards you with the right of way , you have stopped to let them through and then they insist on stopping and making you come through. What on earth for? Haven''t they read the highway code?

I know it's trivial but it has all the potential h the situation where two people meet in a doorway, you say "after you", they then insist on saying "no,after you" and then you collide. Daft.

Anyway rant over....Grin

I hate people who don't indicate, especially at a mini roundabout with a car at each exit.

All that, will he go, will he wait Angry

redlac · 05/07/2012 22:32

I'm with you OP! I want to get out the car and bang on their windscreen shouting I'VE ALREADY STOPPED YOU FUCKWIT!

Don't even get me started on people who stop and try and wave you out at junction that they are indicating to go into IYKWIM - yes its pleasant and nice of you however there is another car coming up behind you who is going straight on and I would be driving right into their path!

SoleSource · 05/07/2012 22:32

Mini roundabouts when I want to go right (as in go back up the road I have just exited) and car drivers assume I am not going to do sobut go another direction Hmm. My right indicator is on and the idiot almost smashes into me Angry from behind.

Wait until the other driver makes their move do not assume!

EatingSwansHorror · 05/07/2012 22:35

What a bastard. Fancy letting someone go. FFS YABU. Get over it.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/07/2012 22:36

I'm sure you do look in your mirror. I apologize for appearing to imply otherwise.

Seriously ... you need to come live near me, then you can get all your aggro out by scowling at cyclists going the wrong way down one-way streets and a minor bit of misguided politeness will cease to disturb you.

PissyDust · 05/07/2012 22:41

I hate people who sit in traffic texting and then honk and shout abuse when you cut them up into their lane because there is a large gap due to them texting instead of driving.

You know who you are you silly bitch, GET OFF YOUR PHONE.

ThePan · 05/07/2012 22:46

picking up on LRD's ref. to cyclists.....as a daily cyclist some drivers being overly polite to each other is nothing. Can we try being overly polite to entirely legally-behaving bikists? That would do a bit to reduce stresses and carnage on roads.....

Summersend · 05/07/2012 22:48

I am so irrationally cross at that! why would they do it!!

Then again I am in an Angry place at mo cos diversion sends people down my street & keep beeping at me for stopping OUTSIDE MY OWN HOUSE. RAH

prettyfly1 · 05/07/2012 22:57

I hate all drivers today. One forty minute journey and I faced:

  1. 3 cars not indicating AT ALL on roundabouts.
  2. 1 pedestrian just walking about on the road on a busy highstreet in rush hour.
  3. A porsche pulling out in front of the bus in front on me nearly causing a mass pile up
  4. Cyclists EVERYWHERE and not the good ones who do it daily on the commute and realise they are part of the roads and should act accordingly but the hobbiests who seem to think the middle of the road is their bit and traffic signals dont apply to them.
  5. An old lady cutting into traffic without looking and nearly hitting my car in the process.

I swear to god its the weather but I needed a brandy after all that!!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/07/2012 22:59

pan, it's not legal for cyclists to go the wrong- way down a one-way street either (I am 99% sure you don't actually mean this, but it is a persistent myth amongst the student population here - most of whom cycle - so I just checking. I mean it about the myth, btw - they genuinely and honestly believe it, they're not just acting as if they do).

But yes, I'm sure lots of drivers could be more decent to cyclists.

ThePan · 05/07/2012 23:11

LRD - yes of course it's illegal, which is why I tried to emphasise the 'legally' riding cyclists (and you're 99% was exactly right!).

I think I was turning it into a Monty Python "Four Yorkshiremen" sketch - ie "you think you've got it bad!" sort of thing.

hth.Grin

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/07/2012 23:30

What with the numbers put together with the riding, I now have the Four Yorkshiremen of the Apocalypse in my head. On bikes. Hmm. Time for bed.

But yes, I am just being paranoid.

ThePan · 05/07/2012 23:34

Wow! That IS a tall order to contemplate, LRD! Sleep well if you can.Grin

SoleSource · 05/07/2012 23:50

THE UTTER CUNT WHOM PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD SHARPLY, NO WARNING
FUCK YOU ARSEHOLE

RedSquizzle · 06/07/2012 01:15

YANBU OP, it's similarly irritating for me as a pedestrian when I'm waiting patiently at the side of the road to cross and a helpful driver with no one behind them brakes and waits for me to cross - firstly because it'd be quicker for all concerned if they'd just carried on as the road was clear behind them if they'd looked, but secondly and more annoyingly, I can't bloody well see you subtly waving me over or waggling your eyebrows to indicate i should cross from inside your massive car/van! Sorry to rant, but it really annoys me! I've taken to pretending to text while I'm waiting so drivers don't feel they're holding me up, then I can just cross when it's clear. And that's not even mentioning the drivers on two-lane sections who insist on stopping and 'making' me cross when the traffic is still moving fast in the other lane. They look really pissed off when I won't step into moving traffic! Nutters.

As a side note, I'm amazed at how many owners of expensive cars out there can't stretch to buying indicators. Grin

doggus · 06/07/2012 01:47

Ooh I hate the not indicating on roundabouts - it's RUDE.

I was at a side turning today waiting to turn right onto a main road, steady stream of traffic. Bloke coming one way slows and flashes to let me out BUT there is a car coming fast in other direction. So I wave and mouth thanks and stay put. He drives past me mouthing abuse! So he'd rather I just pulled out into another car!
