I went for my first contraceptive injection today, my bum hurts now :(

She also stated that i should probably think about losing a few pounds to get me back within the right bmi as it can cause weight gain, i know im abit overweight, im about 5ft 3 and weigh 12st so i deffo could do with it but am not huge! im a size 12-14 and am unreasonably gutted that she wants me to lose weight :(

IABU tell me to put up with the sore bum cheek and steer clear of the cake bars! or regale me with stories about offensive comments and hurting your bum!

She was trying to help you, it does make a lot of women put on weight, so if you are already overweight she did the right thing as a HCP. Thats not offensive.

The depo injection made me put on weight, stopped it after the 4th injection and went on the POP pill. Don't take offence, she was only offering some advice :)

I won't let them do it in my bumb - thigh or arm only. The nurse hates me, she gets as closee to my bum as she can, my GP just loves sticking needles in people (injection, blood test, acupuncture, steroids into joints) so is happy to put it in my arms.

It made me put on weight, I wish they'd warned me or even ever pointed it out. Was on depo for a few years... have never managed to shift the weight gain.

Am defiantly going to keep an eye on it after reading through and your comments, if I do it every week at boots I should notice an increase an be able to do somethin about it. Has made me v paranoid now but suppose can only be a good thing to keep a closer eye. I didn't know u could have it in your arm, might ask that next time bum cheek is still hurting now!

The hormones in the depot can increase your appetite initially. If you can avoid gaining weight in the first month then you should be okay thereafter, was what I was last told on a contraceptive study day (am a practice nurse). Anecdotally I have noticed that the younger girls don't tend to put on weight whereas the over 30's are more likely to ;(
5ft 3 and 12 stone is quite a lot...haven't looked it up but I think it puts your BMI at the upper end of overweight so she was right to say something.

chipsandmushypeas · 06/07/2012 07:19

I put on nearly two stone on the depo so I would take her advice, sorry!

Your BMI is over 29, so of course a health professional has to advise you on it. She can't ignore a health risk just because it may hurt your feelings! Your clothing size is irrelevant in a health context.
