to hate Spike with a passion

Spike is the school attendence mascot.

Disclaimer - I do understand how important it is to attend school and would never let my boys 'skive off' but I have a 5 year old with a temperature of 39.5 who is crying his eyes out because he missed school today and so wont get a bit of cheap plastic shite reward from Spike for being at school every day this term.

The school make such a big deal about 100% attendance, bet they'd be less keen if I sent him, and his germs in.

PS I've also got the cold and feeling lousy so my level of reasonabless is dramatically lowered :)

OP posts:

For a moment I thought you were referring to Spike, my very own vampire Billy Idol from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and was about to pitchfork you Grin but having read your op, YANBU, carry on Grin

(Hope your little boy gets well soon!)

HumphreyCobbler · 04/07/2012 17:32

I hate this rewarding of children when they don't get ill. Stupid system.

But I thought you meant Spike from Buffy, and that clearly would have been unreasonable.

HumphreyCobbler · 04/07/2012 17:32
Grin fight you for him
HeadfirstForHalos · 04/07/2012 17:33

Rewarding for 100% attendance pisses me off too.

Woohoo, well doing for being lucky enough not to get a sick bug or chicken pox this school year.

I normally have high regard for positive school awards but this kind of thing is bollocks.

Onthebottomwithawomansweekly · 04/07/2012 17:33

Maybe get him a little pressie and give it to him on the day of the prizes (after school so that it doesn't conflict) - you could do a little personalised letter from Spike saying that it's a special award for trying so hard?

UnChartered · 04/07/2012 17:33

spike should butt out - it's great if you can get 100% but to make such a big deal out of it is a bloody shame

can you buy some cheap plastic tat something as a reward from you for him being such a trooper?

ThymeLord · 04/07/2012 17:34

Meet you outside the gates Humphrey. FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!

HumphreyCobbler · 04/07/2012 17:35
Grin

actually you can have him, I will stick with Eric

Onthebottomwithawomansweekly · 04/07/2012 17:37

Thymelord and Humphrey that's three of us to fight over Spike

MrsReiver · 04/07/2012 17:38

Back off beeyatches. Spike is mine.

OP YADDDDNBU. I loathe attendance awards and all that crap as well. I have a DS with a handful of chronic conditions which require regular hospital/doctors appointments. Clearly he is never going to win an award for attendance and he gets really quite cross about it - it's not his fault so why penalise him for having health "ishoos" and award others for being health? (or in reality being sent to school when all snottery and ill to generously share their germs with everyone else)

Onthebottomwithawomansweekly · 04/07/2012 17:38

So just you and me Thyme!

Onthebottomwithawomansweekly · 04/07/2012 17:39

Bloody X posting!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 04/07/2012 17:40

This annoys me very very much.

Last week, a child in my boy's class was sick on Wednesday night, returned to school on Thursday. Lo, he has 100% attendance. Whoop-de-doo. The rest of the class however, do not, as they pretty much all caught it.

I am fuming. Another mum (equally fuming) has got the head to send a reminder to all parents to please wait 24 hours since child has vommed before sending them back to school.

ShatnersBassoon · 04/07/2012 17:41

There are cash prizes for the hale and hearty at our school Grin

ThymeLord · 04/07/2012 17:42

You can keep him as 'himself' - it's the peroxide hair and leather coat that does it for me

Onthebottomwithawomansweekly · 04/07/2012 17:48

I'm not fussy I'll take him in any look (did you see him in Torchwood?!)

Bare chest and military jacket (fans self)

TheCrackFox · 04/07/2012 17:49

YANBU

It is just encourages slack parents to send pox ridden, puking, uncontrollably shitting children into school. Guess what? I dont want to catch the plague and think it a much better idea if disease ridden children take the bloody day off school.

HumphreyCobbler · 04/07/2012 17:52

Yes to vampire spike being sexy. The actor is not, he is just a good actor.

MardyArsedMidlander · 04/07/2012 17:55

I am willing to fight ALL of you- if I can just get a sick note. The school is obviously BVVVVU in linking some poxy plastic guilt trip with utter sexfilth that is leather and peroxide.

Tell them to call it Riley Finn instead- everyone hates him anyway Grin

AKMD · 04/07/2012 17:57

At my old school you got £250 if you had 100% attendance for all 5 years Hmm A lot of schools do 100% attendance awards so it must work somehow but I'm firmly of the OP's opinion that it encourages overly-competitive parents to send ill children into school.

Spero · 04/07/2012 18:02

So disappointed. Next time you want to vent, please identify in headline that you refer to school mascot and NOT my future husband. Was really gearing up then. Now feel so deflated.

MardyArsedMidlander · 04/07/2012 18:04

HE SAID HE WOULD MARRY ME Angry . Once the restraining order runs out, obviously....

Dahlen · 04/07/2012 18:06

What I don't get is why they pressurise reward the children since AFAICS whether the average 5-year-old makes it to school or not is pretty much dependent on the parents.

And it's so stupidly contradictory - patronising notes about how important attendance is followed immediately by long-suffering waffle about consideration for other children/staff by not sending in children without waiting 48 hours for D&V etc. YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS!

Oh, and try telling various hospital outpatient departments that they can only see a child after 4.30pm so that it doesn't interfere with attendance records. Good luck with that one! Hmm

Spero · 04/07/2012 18:21

Yeh, yeh mardy, we all know who is delusional on this thread. Don't try to sneak in the back of the church and cause a scene, try to keep what little is left of your dignity.

Returning, reluctantly, to thread - blame the government or whoever setsnthese ridiculous orders targets. I have just become a school governor and was shocked to find out the attitudes to lateness/non attendance. Head mistress tried to convince an I'll child to come in and sit an exam otherwise it buggered up all the stats - illness not a permissible excuse. But surely EVERY child has at least a couple of sick days a year??

Onthebottomwithawomansweekly · 04/07/2012 18:28

Mardy you have a restraining order from Spike? Does it have his ADDRESS on it?!!!
