YABU - IMO, 9:30pm isn't too late. I have had people I don't know call me at that time before let alone MIL! My mother rings at 11pm sometimes.

Sirzy · 02/07/2012 21:34

Unless you are likely to be in bed by then or your MIL knows you have children who are disturbed by the phone ringing then YABU

squeakytoy · 02/07/2012 21:34

not too early if it is close family... I would often ring my mum around this time as it was about the time she and I would both be sat down with a cup of tea

Needingsomeadvice · 02/07/2012 21:35

But, I might add, YWNBU to tell her you are just watching something on TV so would she mind if you called her back another time perhaps.

TheMysteryCat · 02/07/2012 21:36

I don't like phone calls after 10pm, makes me a bit worried it's a bad news call if it's past that.

YANBU, but maybe you should tell your MIL (or ask your DH to) if it's inconvenient.

Sarcalogos · 02/07/2012 21:36

Yabu perfect time to phone family.

soon2bmumof3 · 02/07/2012 21:43

YANBU anything after 9pm gets short shrift in this house, unless it's something urgent I think it's rude to call people at this time - its your wind down time before bed. My IL's used to do it all the time, they got the message when we stopped answering Wink

applepieinthesky · 02/07/2012 21:53

As a one-off it wouldn't bother me if family called at that time. But I like to speak to them early evening when I get in from work and then relax for the rest of the night.

MyDaydream · 02/07/2012 21:57

To me 9.30 is pushing it for too late for me, if it was important and couldn't wait or an emergency that's fine, but a chat could have happened earlier. But if me and my mum have a chat it can go on for an hour, so we call early. If you think it's too late tell her to call earlier.

wishingonadream · 02/07/2012 21:58

Thanks, she knows that I always go to bed early (10pm). Will admit i am a bit of a light weight. Just feel it is our turn to relax together after dd has gone to bed. Speaking of which, I am now off to bed

9 pm watershed in our house. If the phone rings after that we turn into the peter Kay skit......who's that, who's that? We generally go into meltdown if it's after 10 pm!

MrsJohnMurphy · 02/07/2012 22:44

9.30pm would be fine for me, it would be perfect actually, all dc's in bed, chores done, nice sit down. However I would never call my sisters at that time because they seem to go to bed pretty early. If it was just a quick chat yabu tbh.

CremeEggThief · 02/07/2012 22:53

After 9 p.m. is when I make my phone calls, so YAB a little U, sorry.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 02/07/2012 22:55

YABU. When would you like her to call?

Hassled · 02/07/2012 22:57

It depends on so many factors - does she know when you go to bed? Does she know when the DCs go to sleep? I've just come off the phone from my mate - but we both know this is a good time for a chat.

Does depend on lots of factors.
It's difficult to avoid meal times, bath times, bedtime story times, fave prog times, of people sometimes, and yet squeeze into a very small window that is sen as 'acceptable' when presumably she wants to speak to her ds, who may not be there in the day (and presumably you don't want calls before the working day starts ?).
I wouldn't phone someone whose routine I didn't know after 9, but I don't mind up to around about 9.30, for someone to call me.
