To think not all slow cookers are the same?

And am I just being a snob?

I have a huge (6litre) Morphy Richards slow cooker which is fab and I love it but it is a bit big considering there is only dh and I (ds has a stomach the size if a fly).

MIL wants to swap my big slow cooker for her much smaller one as she has a larger family. However hers is "unbranded" I think she got it from Asda for £15 and I have my reservations that a slow cooker such as that will be any good (every cheap kettle or toaster I've ever owned has been shite so I have no trust in cheap kitchen appliances).

So am I wrong and being an utter snob? Or will the cheap slow cooker be just as good?

Yes you are being a snob... of course it doesnt matter if it is "unbranded" so long as it still works, which I assume it does.

ethelb · 27/06/2012 16:07

that's beside the point. why should you swap your stuff if you don't want to?

Was this Mil's idea?

Magneto · 27/06/2012 16:07

Yes it works but will it keep working or will it end up on the landfill with all the kettles? I don't think MiL has used it very much.

I dont think theres much to a slow cooker to be honest and so her asda one will prob be fine.

saying that, my Morphy Richards one has been going and going for years now (14) and I have used it a lot in the winters.

Magneto · 27/06/2012 16:09

Yes it was MILs idea, I am twitching at the fact that I would lose the difference in price between mine and hers.

ethelb · 27/06/2012 16:10

it's not hers to take. tell her to do one.

NineTailors · 27/06/2012 16:10

I'd hold onto the Morphy Richards one!

squeakytoy · 27/06/2012 16:10

I would go and get a second slow cooker, a small one, and have both. There will probably be times when you still need to use the big one.. and you could buy MIL a new big one for christmas. :)

CamperWidow · 27/06/2012 16:12

Mine was £10 from Tesco about 6 months ago and I've used it at least twice a week since and never had a problem with it!

However, I wouldn't part with a Morphy Richards one because I would have had to save to get that!

Magneto · 27/06/2012 16:15

That's just it, I had to save and researched slow cookers for a day ages and bought one I thought would last and last. I don't want to let it go. Getting her one as a Christmas present sounds like a good idea.

@betty if you have used it for 14 years why woudl you not need it now?

its just me a dp at home but if I got a slow cooker I would get a biggun so I could freeze stuff, and feed my large extened family when they come round.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 27/06/2012 16:20

Ethel - Eh?? lol. I love my slow cooker, was just saying its had a lot of use and 14 years later its still going strong.

OP - keep hold of yours, esp after doing all that research!! Let your MIL treat herself to a bigger one!

TheCunningStunt · 27/06/2012 16:22

Keep it. You will need a bigger one eventually if your DS is anything like mine who eats and eats!

Jins · 27/06/2012 16:25

My morphy Richards broke after 3 years and I replaced it with an Asda one. Onn I think. It's still going strong after 5 years. The only issue I have is that the low setting is a bit high.

starpine · 27/06/2012 16:28

yanbu magneto,i have a cheap slow cooker it cooks the food fine but if you want to eat it above room temp it needs heating up in the micro which makes the food go chewy, defeating the purpose of slow cooking it

Groovee · 27/06/2012 16:29

I've had an unbranded tesco one for about 7 years. I love it.

Idocrazythings · 27/06/2012 16:29

No they're not all the same- you get what you pay for

MsVestibule · 27/06/2012 16:36

The simmering oven in my Aga is the best slow cooker possible.

See, I managed to stealth boast AND be extremely unhelpful in the same post Wink.
