To hate ANTS - HELP

I used to quite like ants. I thought they were interesting creatures. I didn't even mind them coming into the house from time to time.

But now I have an infestation. I have lived in my house for a few months. Never saw a single ant. Then about a week ago I noticed some flying ants in my kitchen. I investigated and realised they were flying out of a nest in the ceiling of my kitchen. Since then I have had hundreds every day. I got some of those ant trap things yesterday to deal with the nest but in the meantime still being infested by the flying ones. I am in tears and just want to go and stay in a hotel. What can I do?????

I really feel for you :( All I can think of is some kind of fly killer and spray it in the hole they are coming out from??? Have you called a pest control company? They may be able to put pay to them straight away. Good luck I hope you have peace to enjoy your new home soon.

You could leave a jam jar with the lid open so they crawl in and then get stuck? That might get rid of some other than that I do not know anything else to suggest...

Is there no-one you could call to come and get rid of the nest? A bit like pest control?

We had ants in the house coming in a small gap by the front door. We found the best thing was an ant spray rather than powder as it kills them in seconds ans dries almost instantly. It keeps working as long as the area doesn't get wet (if it does just respray), we used it over two years ago and there's been no more ants coming in through the gap.

I don't know if it will work for the nest but it should work for the flying ones.

Thanks. I may have to get professional help. Any other hints in the meantime would be appreciated!!

Polenta - the raw ground maize not the preprepared stuff. Sprinkle dry polenta about, they eat some and/ or take it back and feed it to the others. The polenta swells, they die. This was the advice my mother gave me last summer when i had three nasty red ant nests.

It worked!

And it got rid of normal boring black ants last week too.

Cinnamon sprinkled round them gets rid of them and smells nice.

ants dont like peppermint oil or tea tree oil, both of which are cheap enough and not harmful to humans/pets

Excellent, thank you.

Ant Stop bait stations are v good - they also do a spray. As a temporary measure, talcum powder is suprisingly good at keeping them at bay.
