dp and i live together. no dc. dp is a cabbie and can go in and come home when he likes. he works early morning til 7pm weekdays and my current bone of contention is him working weekend nights. For example, today he has been gone since 7am. He came home an hour ago for tea, so stayed half an hour, then went back out to work again as he had a booked job, and I expected him home after that one job, but he's just phoned to say he's staying working for about an other hour. That's 16 hours on the road! Sure he get's quiet moments where he parks up and waits for work, but that's not the point. Thing is, if it stays busy after an hour, I know he'll stay out later, probably til 2am til the pubs kick out. He thinks it's ok coz he'll be home tomorrow and takes me for sunday lunch, but it's not ok. I was looking forward to spending an hour before bed having a wind down together as we don't have to get up in the morning, but i'll be struggling to stay awake when he comes in later and i'm mad at him anyway. He gets upset and thinks IABU because I go on at him working Saturday nights as i'd like us to spend them together, but i'm getting tired of the constant working now. He thinks it's ok too as we go away for a night one weekend a month. We don't even need the money. He just sees £ signs infront of his eyes and gets greedy.

I take it there's no legislation about driving 16 hours a day, like there would be with lorry drivers.

It's a tough one

Expecting a cabbie to not work on Friday and Saturday nights is a bit like expecting an A&E Nurse to work 9-5.

It's where the money is and earning money is probably is top priority as I don't know that many cabbies who do it for the love of driving pissed people around.

Don't mean to make you feel shit, but my dh used to be a cabby before he met me..and he had ample opportunity to cheat. He did (his ex) as did many other workmates

cabbys have to do the hours for money these days. Its not good business like it used to be, you have to do the hours to get the money.

Next time he's home, ask him for £200, say you have seen something you must have, it's totally brilliant, life changing and there is nothing you want to buy more in the world, can't live without it,

Hand him back the £200, and book him for a couple of hours next Saturday night.

It's really hard to get the life work balance right.

My DH is a cabbie and really needs to work fridays and saturdays to make any money at all. With the cost of fuel it is getting worse. In fact he only takes one night off a fortnight and one week holiday a year. I have had one night out this year and that was for my birthday and he even went out to work afterwards.

He's self employed. He's probably been through the lean times before. Makes sense to make money whilst you can. As others have said, weekends are where he makes his money and YABU to expect him to not work at peak times.

You have a weekend away a month? Thats a lot more than a lot of people get in a year. He's making sure he has his quality time with you. Would you give up your weekends away because his working Friday and Saturday is probably paying for it.

What if he gets ill and cant work for a while? Dodgy business cabbying, only takes one drunk to give him a good hiding over a fare and he could be in hospital for months.
