We are having our hallways and stairs painted (because we can't reach to do it ourselves, or we would not be paying someone because Im a cheap-skate )

They 2 lovely painters have just been round to discuss colours. We just way white all the way through as it's quite a dark space and will get a lot of grubby fingers and scuffs and white is easy to touch up.

So what's to discuss right? WRONG?

There are nigh on 60 shades of white and all with each name more ridiculous than the next!

Clunch, Elephant's Breath, Pixie Dust, Fancy White, Timeless....and right at the end........Just White.

Why must things be so complicated?

Clunch Shock

MrsNouveauRichards · 08/06/2012 17:55

All that matters is that it's wipe clean! We are getting ours done while we go on holiday and I am going for kitchen and bathroom or family room paint!

BumpingFuglies · 08/06/2012 17:57

Do mind my clunch darling, it's rather tender Grin

Ahem.

Sorry thatisall. Most annoying about the whites.

It'll be allwhite, I'm sure.

thatisall · 08/06/2012 18:10

Lambzig · 08/06/2012 18:12

hmm, sounds like you are Farrow and Balling. don't get that, it doesnt wipe clean easily.

bochead · 08/06/2012 18:13

Dulux (or other easily obtainable brand )"TRADE WHITE" for future touch ups. Screwfix is a good supplier.

Next

Strong white is good.

Shirting by Little Greene is the whitest white I've seen, very nice.

Anyway, if you think there are a lot of whites then a word of advice: never try to find the perfect grey!

thatisall · 08/06/2012 18:14

It is F and B indeed, but Im not Cherry Menlove so will be trusting the Trade white that the painters have proposed lol.

They though I might want them to get a specific shade of white mixed for the job.....bless

LG is superior to F&B IMO.

sereneswan · 08/06/2012 18:15

Oh I remember this, I had DH going to B&Q at 7am for more tester pots the day the decorators were starting because I didn't like any of the 57463527 samples I'd already tried!

If it's any help if you want proper plain white, but with the edge of the brightness and starkness just taken off - go for Dulux Trade White (as opposed to the Pure Brilliant White). It's really lovely. Looks cool and fresh in daylight (all Swedishy and lovely) and nice and warm and glowing at night by artificial light. We had it in a few rooms until we were talked out of it on the grounds it would show up unevenness in plaster more than off-white. Your decorators will also LOVE you for giving them Dulux Trade rather than F&B.

If you want a warm off white try Dulux Jasmine White. It's a lovely simple creamy very pale off-white with absolutely no green/grey/blue/peach/whatever undertones at all. We went for that and I swear I'm never using anything else ever again. It works with everything.

thatisall · 08/06/2012 18:15

Gin we've already had the grey discussion a couple of months ago....almost broke me

Clunch not clinch, re: previous post. See even the auto spell knows it's just not 'cricket' which is another shade of white lol

redyam · 08/06/2012 18:41

Well if it helps, we painted the loft 'white chiffon' and the lounge 'nutmeg white'. Yes they are both white, but slightly different!

IWishIWasSheRa · 08/06/2012 18:44

Go for dulux brilliant white matt emulsion- the wipe clean ones have a sheen so when you touch it up you see the brush direction

Catsmamma · 08/06/2012 18:44

i have said it before...go to nearest diy superstore, buy their most largest and most cheapest matt pure brilliant white emulsion....apply many many coats to the wall

it's all about coverage and not actual colour

and before the week is out enough filth will have been daubed on the walls by sundry cats/dogs/children/husbands that you can pass it of as whatever the latest IN colour is!

BumpingFuglies · 08/06/2012 19:45

But Clunch? Go for trade white, they'll probably leave you half a bucket anyway. DO get silk or soft sheen though - matt is a nightmare to clean.
