Now, while I agree that trolls trying to get people's hard earned wong, or sympathy for a vampire dh draining the blood of his infants nightly, are not a Good Thing and should be swiftly dispatched, can't we keep the very funny and obvious ones, like yesterday's Yerp Pedophiles for eg?

They are FUN. Everyone knows they are not entirely the ticket, no one is taken in and most important of all we all get a good larf.

Especially when you're living in the downstairs loo.
(Am I in trouble now)?

2shoes · 08/06/2012 12:14

no if trolls are not allowed they should all be banned.
what is funny for one person can be hurtful to another,

Hullygully · 08/06/2012 12:16

That's nonsense, loads of the funniest threads were made up by posters.

What's the diff between "made up" and troll?

OP posts:
manicbmc · 08/06/2012 12:16

I like a bad troll. Don't much care for the good ones that suck you in. But the bad ones are fun so long as it doesn't descend into name calling and personal attacks.

Trills · 08/06/2012 12:17

Shouldn't this be in Site Stuff? Wink

I'm fairly certain "AIBU to think DH should have booked us a hotel further in advance, especially since it's Christmas Eve and I am heavily pregnant?" is still there. (not exact title but you get the idea)

Hullygully · 08/06/2012 12:18

Absolutely trills.

Yerp pedophiles was vair vair funny and no narstiness at all.

OP posts:
WhosPickleisThatOnion · 08/06/2012 12:19

I agree. I liked Ang Goblin. Sure if they offend anyone 2shoes they will be dispatched pretty quickly.

StealthPolarBear · 08/06/2012 12:20

I posted a reply to Rebecca on that thread too late, just as it went poof. She said trolls feed on attention and they should nt get it. And I do agree. That thread was harmless but others by that troll may be of the give me your money or sympathy type. Plus I think there is a difference between a normal poster having some fun (small ships - which ironically iirc was about poo) and someone who only trolls, trolling iyswim

Petsinmypudenda · 08/06/2012 12:21

I like the witty and poo trolls. The threads always make me giggle. It adds a bit of fun.
My life is full of doom of gloom I don't want to read endless threads about depressing shit.

FaceForRadio · 08/06/2012 12:23

not keen on ther made up threads by 'known' posters on a namechange tbh.

should not be one rule for one and another for the other.

consistency is they key.

Moominsarescary · 08/06/2012 12:26

I don't have a problem with whitty obviously made up troll threads, however I know many people have been upset on bereavement threads by trolls pretending to have lost children

Hullygully · 08/06/2012 12:27

It isn't one rule for one and one for another.

Troll = I want some food: cash or emotion

Made-up = let's all have a larf (together)

Barking Loon (eg Yerp) = let's all have a larf together at them.

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 08/06/2012 12:27

I don't even mean known. Just posters who have even for a short while been 'normal' rather than out and out trolls. But I take your point, and think that would be difficult to police. Obv if someone stopped half way through and said "i am Pag watch" then fine, but if the reveal was "i am mummytojamesandtwins" then they'd be likely to get a much harder time even if they'd posted on 50 other threads with sound advice.

Hullygully · 08/06/2012 12:28

Why do I have to keep repeating the difference?

Why?

Why?

Come on, people, like get with it.

OP posts:
chipsandmushypeas · 08/06/2012 12:29

I think without trolls forums wouldn't have half the traffic they do

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 08/06/2012 12:32

There are obvious trolls. But some of the threads I see where some posters shout troll, I am not so sure that they are right

Yummymummyyobe1 · 08/06/2012 12:33

I feel a little sorry for trolls as they obviously have very empty lives to make up a thread . xx

SuzySheepSmellsNice · 08/06/2012 12:40

It just gets very confusing for us relative newbies when people start screaming troll, then getting narky and mean... Seems to escalate from nowhere! Then MN goes all dictatorial official on us and deletes the posts which really annoys me as I want to know what they said. It even happened on a live-birth thread at the weekend, some people are just pathetic!

Hullygully · 08/06/2012 12:43

but but but Look ^^^

I'm arguing to keep THE OBVIOUS AND FUNNY ONES THAT DON'T HURT ANYONE

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 08/06/2012 12:44

but they will be encouraged by the attention they get on MN and it may make them hang around in order to post the "dead dog, dying cat, H has walked out because I fed him catfood" ones

StealthPolarBear · 08/06/2012 12:45

as in they will seee MN as a place that doesnt clamp down on trolling

usualsuspect · 08/06/2012 12:48

The obvious and funny trolls are quite entertaining and poking these sort of trolls keeps me amused

AlexReidsLonelyBraincell · 08/06/2012 12:50

I love the ones that post mid action e.g "I am posting this barricaded into my bathroom as an army of zombie hamsters is banging on the door, WWYD?"

They manage to update through a complete rollercoaster of drama. Pure dedication to MN that.

ScarlettInSpace · 08/06/2012 12:53

I had a comment deleted once, just cos I said I found something hard to believe, iirc the thread eventually went tits up because everyone piled on the op but I personally wasn't doubting the poster well maybe I was a bit really I was doubting the situation could really happen based on the facts given, most frustrating, I felt like I'd been given detention without being given chance to defend myself and blame someone else

When we walk over a bridge my 4yr old SS always says 'clip clop, who's walking over myyyyy bridge' and then we have to look for the trolls. It always makes me think of here Grin

knowitallstrikesagain · 08/06/2012 12:53

I think loads of people fib/exagerate on MN. I'm sure there are also people who change the sex of their child, make their DP a DH, etc. There is a fine line between this and making up part of your OP and making up the whole OP. If something is funny and not hurtful, when does it cross the line?

However this coming from a woman who accidentally told people to 'fuck off' and 'strip off' on two different threads on the same day, not helping put my name into a good light!
