acronyms.....

When I talk about my kids, I put their age behind it... DS8, DD6....this way anyone reading my posts know my kids age.....

I don't use it to display what order my child was born in... DS1 (dear first born son), etc.....

I finally figured out fellow Mums, and their acronyms... I wonder if they figured out mine! lol...

ps...your way is confusing...as when I read it, I presume your child is ONE years old... Not your "first born"....

Maybe put age in brackets. I have DD1(17) DD2(6) DS(5). You can get the info across easily and it may be less confusing.

Er................ sorry to be a pedant, but DS is not an acronym.

DS is not an acronym. It's an abbreviation, as are a fair few of the items on the Mumsnet acronym list.

No no - an acronym must be spoken as a word.

DS is an initialism, unless you are pronouncing it 'dssss' which I think you are not.

Lol is an acronym if you pronounce it 'loll' which a lot of people do.

AWOL and ASAP are acronyms because people pronounce them 'ay-wol' and 'ay-sap'.

IYSWIM is an initialism.

Yes, like AIDS is an acronym but HIV usually isn't. (Don't think people usually call it "hiv", do they? Most people would say the initials.)

DS is an abbreviation.

For it to be an acronym, the initial letters of the phrase should make a word - like radar, laser, AIDS, SARS, AWOL etc.

Actually I never say ay-sap for ASAP. I just say the letters. Thought I only heard it in USA where they pronounce it.

Mamma... I thought ot this... "DD1(17) DD2(6) DS(5)", how would you know if they are yrs or months?? Turn it into DD2(6m)... whew... I don't know... think no one really cares what order I gave birth to them...more of what age they are...

might slide back into my old ways...as DD8.... is much simpler than DD5(8yr) I'll get my own children abbreviations confused! lol

Umm, going by your name alone I'd assume you had 8 Dds if you put Dd8 (plus the fact that that's how it's done here)

If you had separated it with a comma (eg my ds, 8, bla bla bla) I would've got that it was an age, but reading ds8 I would have assumed that was your eighth child!
