Now he is narky as I have reminded him of this when he asked iff dd wanted to go to street party on his road

Don't think too much about it. I'm not a royalist but I can't resist an egg sandwich. The street parties are for the community, and whatever your political leanings they can be good for the soul.

I do find the concept of a monarchy to be completely whacko, but we have one, and they're not burning Protestants/Catholics, nor do they have a lot of power. Most of the street parties around here are focusing on the 'Union' part of the Union Flag, the Queen is a sideshow... our village is celebrating the fact that although we're on the Welsh border where politics and tensions often are overtly apparent, we're not killing each other and its something to celebrate.

I also think when children are involved, its good to allow them to get mucked in with the community spirit. I remember the Silver Jubilee, I remember it being a lovely day out with the whole community, I was too young to be political and tbh wouldn't have understood it if my folks disallowed me to join in, even if they explained, I'd have still thought they were miserable buggers.

Don't be confused. Tell yourself that your participation is purely for your dd to experience community spirit, and that's a GOOD THING. You do not have to start being a royalist to enjoy it.

I know I've said community spirit too much, even my toes are curling and my hermit tendencies are tempting me to take down the bunting right now but I do think that ultimately the celebrations, just for the sake of celebrating are life enhancing in an otherwise pretty grim era.

God no don't put here in a Pistols t.shirt, that would be embarrassing.

I see what you mean. I don't really get the "it's only a party, it doesn't mean you're a royalist!" thing. It's a party to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. To go is to support. I'm not going, though I wouldn't stop anyone else from celebrating. I just wish the people who aren't going would admit that they actually are pretty much royalists.

YABU - I'm sure it's just an excuse for a lot of food and drink and games for the kids and the vast majority won't be standing to attention to the National Anthem!
