To wonder why people 'love' the royal family?

I mean, it's nice that the queen is an old lady, and I respect all old ladies just for being old and surviving to their 80s, and having nice manners (as the queen seems to).

And it's nice that William and Catherine got married last year. But then, lots of other people also got married last year. And some of them also wore nice frocks (not William, of course).

So why else do people 'love' them?

It's human nature to need something to follow. Be it religion, football, a political party or slebs. The royals are just another option.

They 'love' them because people love stuff. Like cats, or meeting their friends at the cinema, or the Newsnight corespondent with the flat vowels.

Because some people are convinced that other people are better than them for some reason. People used to tell me about their charity work with a straight face. I have collected for charities since I can remember, worked for them FOR A PITTANCE since I was 18. My friends from school and college earn 6 figures and I really, really don't because I chose charity work over money. No one is chucking BMWs and houses at me, though. Charity work, my arse. And don't get me started on tourism. Versailles still makes money and the French chopped their heads off.

I put a picture up of Her Maj today in the window, in honour obviously of Jubilee. DP was a bit Hmm aabout it. But she's nice, I remember the silver jubilee, she has been in my life (in a very tiny way) forever.

Not a monarchist in any other way but oh well hooooraay!

I really really don't get it. Having said that I guess that they are comforting as they seem to epitomise `britishness' (whatever THAT might be) but I really really don't get it.

oh and mrsterryprachett I remember when Windsor Castle burnt down and we all had to contribute to repairing it as it belonged to us'. Oh REALLY? can we all have a night in our' Castle then? Thought not.

And if you have met the queen, have you met her for more than about 3 minutes? I'm sure she can be polite for about 3 minutes - anyone can. even I can!

As per my OP - how can anyone who doesn't actually know the queen claim to 'love' her?

I think "love" is an example of tabloid speak in this context. Affectionate respect might be a more measured way of putting it: or just something about holding them in high esteem is what would probably be muttered from under a Stiff Upper Lip.

I saw a Jubilee programme in Tescos with a dreadful picture of teh Queen and Prince Philip and it reminded me of those photos in really Royalist countries such as Thailand and Nepal whereby the Monarchy are worshiped like Gods. A bit creepy imho.
