To tell DP to cut the excessive exercise?

DP and I split recently and have gotten back together, albeit with a list of "conditions" and "agreements". One thing I never brought up, which I wish I had was his excessive exercise routines. He goes to the gym three nights a week, martial arts twice a week and swimming on a weekend. Aside from this he does a number of "home" exercises like sit ups, cock push ups and press ups.
AIBU to tell him to cut this down so we can spend more time together, despite the fact that our lists of "conditions" have already been "set" so to speak?

I do have hobbies myself, I horse ride once a week and I play a bit of tennis but never at times when it impacts the time WE spend together iyswim?

CrispyCod · 31/05/2012 20:08

squeaky you beat me to it! Grin

EclecticShock · 31/05/2012 20:10

It does seem to take a disproportionate amount of his time but if that's what he wants, you either put up with it or you don't. Talk to him to see if there's any room for compromise.

squeakytoy · 31/05/2012 20:12

Lots of people go to the gym a few times a week, it makes sense to get your moneys worth, it would depend on if he is spending all night there. If he is finished by 7pm, then I wouldnt see a problem. Swimming is not an all day event either.

aquashiv · 31/05/2012 20:15

what is this cock push upsShock Op?

maybenow · 31/05/2012 20:18

cock push ups??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

an hour of exercise a day is pretty healthy actually, so long as he does it at a time that is agreed to be least disruptive to family life and doesn't conflict. DH and i both try to do something a few nights a week and would love to manage 5-6 nights but it's my laziness that stops me Blush

NarkedPuffin · 31/05/2012 20:19

Hmm. These are things that make him happy and keep him healthy. It's a fine line. I might ask for one midweek night you can spend together. Would it be possible for you to go to the gym too? To do a class when he's doing whatever (cock push ups [grin ) and have dinner out afterwards? Could you take up something new and sporty together?

Is it the time apart that's the issue of is he not really 'there' when you are together? It's possible to spend a really lovely half hour chatting and snuggling or to spend 90 minutes sitting next to each other on the sofa staring at the tv like zombies. Or are you resentful because he spends the time on himself and you spend spare time on shitty household chores/paying bills etc? Would it help if you acquired a new hobby or took a night to go to the cinema with friends?

NarkedPuffin · 31/05/2012 20:20

If you have children and he's leaving you to do all the childcare then YADNBU.

FredFredGeorge · 31/05/2012 20:21

So what 5ish hours +travel to the gym/pool outside the house and another couple of hours in the house a week? Doesn't sound particularly excessive - depending on how physical a job it's barely the recommended amount to stay healthy (although the lots of gym work/weights work is not going to be counted on that as the recommendations are really about aerobic work which is most valuable simply for health.)

But if you're not happy with the amount of time it takes, then you have to talk to him and come to an arrangement, for me, and I believe DP that would not be enough personal time for sure.

squeakytoy · 31/05/2012 20:24

hmmmm

only a few days ago

TheCunningStunt · 31/05/2012 20:27

I too need to know what a cock push up is....

Nagoo · 31/05/2012 20:43

Jack Black goes on about them on the Tenacious D album. It's pushing up with your cock.

I am hoping that it is an auto-correct failure...

NarkedPuffin · 31/05/2012 20:43

Oh.

In that case...

squeakytoy · 31/05/2012 20:57

why do people start a thread and then just vanish....

BelieveInPink · 31/05/2012 20:59

Huh and what now with the cock push ups?

Anyway, I wouldn't mind during the week but weekends I would

Pandemoniaa · 31/05/2012 21:15

I can't concentrate on the reasonability of any of this until I'm fully briefed about the cock push ups. Do they involve chickens? Wink

Freshletticia · 31/05/2012 21:29

Er, Troll!

CharlieBitMe · 31/05/2012 21:32

Cock Push up is when you lift yourself off the ground with your groin. It's a strengthening exercise.

BelieveInPink · 31/05/2012 21:36
