I cringe when I read a serious news story followed by some banal shite tweeted (presumably often not intended by tweeter to be printed to be fair)

Surely whether it is newsworthy depends on who said it and what it is? Just like any other comment in fact. The fact that the comment appeared on Twitter is neither here nor there. Any tweet is already in the public domain, so if people don't want it out there, they shouldn't tweet it.
