Sorry, I know this is a weird request, but it's for a good cause!

I work with this group for people with learning disabilities in Cambridge. They're collecting the ring pulls from beer and fizzy drink cans for a special project, and are appealing for help. So if you have a couple of cans in your house or recycle bin, and wouldn't mind taking off the ring pulls and posting them in, it would really help. If you write "Mumsnet" somewhere on the envelope, we'll pile them all up and take a photo to show you all how many we get and what we're about to do with them.

I've heard that there may have been scams about collecting ring pulls in the past, but I can verify that this is the real deal. It will cost you a stamp, but if you can spare it the guys would really appreciate it. If you visit the page, there's an "About Us" section where you can see some of the group members and their work too!

I'll get you some too. I'm a teacher, I am always collecting random things for projects. My husband knows not to throw anything away without checking first!

Crisp packets is the current thing.

I'll save ours too x

cornflowers · 26/05/2012 19:01

Well, I've just salvaged a dozen or so from the diet coke cans in my recycling & cut my thumb in the process! Those things are sharp!

iliketea · 26/05/2012 19:14

Have you contacted all the local schools / surgeries / grocery shops to advertise for you? I am around that area a lot and haven't seen any adverts for ring pulls - or maybe I just don't notice! Smile

fuzzypicklehead · 26/05/2012 19:18

We've hit mostly local shops with collection containers, but we found that many were already collecting for other purposes. Corner shops have been great, though!

Will put the word out here and keep any we get (but unfortunatly we don't drink many cans!) Have you asked in local bars and cafes? I worked in a bar as a student and we were always keeping ring pulls and /or bottle caps for one group or another :)

PassTheBaileys · 26/05/2012 20:13

I don't drink anything out of cans, unless out and about and gasping for a drink. DP drinks roughly about 8 cans of Lager over the weekends though so could possibly get about 40 sent. Will get attacking his cans later :o

fuzzypicklehead · 27/05/2012 00:00

That's super, thanks! We have been out around the town centre to drop off collection bags around bars and cafes.

Cake and diet coke I hope!
I have a measly 3 from a barbecue yesterday

molepom · 27/05/2012 11:23

I'll be able to send you a few.

stargazer83 · 27/05/2012 12:20

I have a few hundred already and I will collect more and send towards the end of June as long as I don't forget!

fuzzypicklehead · 27/05/2012 18:41

I'll bump around then to remind.

cakeismysaviour · 27/05/2012 18:44

I will collect some and send in a few weeks. :)

fuzzypicklehead · 08/06/2012 21:34

Woo-hoo, got my first packet in the post today!

OP posts:
Shutupanddrive · 08/06/2012 21:38

Have posted this on my Facebook and will collect them, I have loads!

MammaTJ · 08/06/2012 21:54

I daren't tell my DP about this for fear of justifying his drinking, but I will secretly steal the ring pulls!!

fuzzypicklehead · 09/06/2012 08:37

MamaTJ--I know the feeling. When I mentioned to my husband that I wanted to make whiskey bottle lamps, I was a little alarmed at how quickly they started to become available!

Am making a parcel, have got all my friends to collect too, will send around the 25th.

UKSky · 20/06/2012 23:58

Will be sending some in a few days.

I thought we got through a lot until I read some of these posts. We are mere amateurs. Smile

StealthPolarBear · 21/06/2012 00:05

I have a small pile on the windowsill, if you wouldn't mind PMing your address, I will send them in the next day or so
(or have you already sent me your address? I forget...)

fuzzypicklehead · 24/06/2012 21:13

Last bump before the end of the month! Thanks so much everybody who has been collecting. The address for postage is here and I'll update with photos of how many we collect and what our man makes from them.

Ok everybody, June is now officially over! So (with a little less fanfare than previously anticipated because I'm pining for my lost dog ) we are ready for your bottle tops. If you've been collecting them, please send them in to this address. If you write your MN handle somewhere on the package, we'll be making a league table to see which mumsnetter sends in the most ring pulls. That lucky individual is up for a super special, handmade, ring-pull creation from the group! Time to get posting!
