Smoking in school grounds.

I was waiting to collect DC from pre-school, was 5-10 mins early and there were a few other parents also waiting. One parent got up, moved away from where we were waiting and lit up a fag. I was Shock because

1 - It was right in the middle of the school grounds.

2 - Said parent then moved to stand outside the reception doors where the P1 and P2 children come out. Finished his fag then flicked it on the ground.

Anyway I said nothing. Then today they did it again. I'm not that comfortable with saying something directly. WIBU to mention to staff or should I just keep my mouth shut? There's only a few weeks left of the school year anyway.

Feel like I want to point out I'm not an anti-smoking lobbyist. Just that I don't think its an appropriate place to smoke.

I'm a smoker and I don't smoke in my house or car (even when dc's aren't there) I would never smoke in the school grounds. If this guy does it again either say something yourself or mention it to someone in school.

Missingmum, why do you think it's inappropriate to smoke in the grounds of a school, but acceptable in the grounds of a hospital?

Sidge · 25/05/2012 13:25

I would inform the Head (of the school, preschool, whatever) so they can tell this person that he cannot and should not smoke on school grounds.

I was waiting outside classrooms once after sports day to collect the children and told a parent she shouldn't light her cigarette as the school grounds are non-smoking. She said "but we're outside!". Fuckwit.

Haven't they banned smoking in hospital grounds too now? It is slightly different, the less our kids see adults smoking the less they will want to do it I hope. (hypocritical of me I know!) That's why I think the smoking ban is a good idea hopefully smoking will be seen as uncool and something only oldies do.

There are smoking shelters within hospital grounds still.

Well, today I was running late and they had actually already dropped their dc at nursery and then sat down on the stairs to smoke! There's a huge grass bank and wall they can sit on outside the gates.

So I asked staff what the smoking policy was on school grounds, there are no signs up cos I checked. She wasn't sure and said she would check. AFAIK all LA sites are no smoking.

My local hospital is non smoking in buildings and grounds.

A member of staff seen smoking would be in trouble.

A member of the public who is visiting possibly staying with a dying relative, or who has just been told bad news will smoke outside- I dare you to go and tell them not to smoke.
