to think this is a bit gross?

Have been a member of a gym for a few months now and I keep seeing women who leave classes or workouts in the gym all sweaty (as do I) but then they stand at the mirrors and blow dry the sweat out of their hair! They even sometimes touch up their make-up then leave the gym without showering/changing.

I get people don't like communal changing/showers, although the ones there are pretty nice but wouldn't you just head straight to the car to go home to shower, or if you were in a hurry wouldn't you factor in shower/hairwashing time? It can't smell very nice or even feel very nice to have 'dried sweat hair'!

Is this a phenomenon that goes on in all gyms and why do they do it? aibu to think that its just a bit minging?

yeah, it is a bit but it's their problem. You can waft out of there all fragrant and leave them to their stink lines trailing behind them Grin

Just out of interest - how do you know they don't just go right home and shower? Some women would retouch their makeup even if it was just for the journey home.

wasabipeanut · 23/05/2012 20:05

I think YANBU but then I am a clean freak.

usualsuspect · 23/05/2012 20:05

Maybe they shower when they get home?

doublechocchip · 23/05/2012 20:05

Well I suppose they could go home and shower but surely that was what hoodies were invented for, to pop one over your workout gear, hood up and gentle jog to the car. Tis quite mad!

I dry my hair before I leave. I just hate that wet hair/red face combo! I do then have a shower as soon as I get home!

usualsuspect · 23/05/2012 20:06

Maybe they came on the bus? or walked

surroundedbyblondes · 23/05/2012 20:08

ewww!

I hate communal changing so would probably go home in sweaty gym clothes and shower at home, but I wouldn't put make-up on top of my red, sweaty face. Wouldn't it just slide off anyway?

doublechocchip · 23/05/2012 20:09

But if you were getting the bus usual surely you would definitely shower before leaving incase you had to sit next to someone and you were merrily stinking and sweating away?

They could be walking I suppose but then surely nobody walks to the gym Shock

I've never been to the gym , so what do I know Grin

axure · 23/05/2012 20:11

It's gross if they are all sweaty, however there are women at my gym who do such feeble exercise they don't even go red faced don't know why they bother.

celticlassie · 23/05/2012 20:11

I walk to the gym! Angry And walk home afterwards, as I only live 15 mins away, and just have a shower when I get home. Don't blow dry my hair though, just walk home all sweaty. Blush

doublechocchip · 23/05/2012 20:15

Glad to hear it celticlassie wear that sweat with pride, you earned it!

still trying to figure out why you'd put on makeup to begin with if you're going to the gym to get all sweaty.... Confused... much less touch it up afterwards.

CaliforniaLeaving · 24/05/2012 00:32

I drive home and shower, I never understood wearing make up to the gym I am dripping and wiping my face while there so would wipe it all off.
It's pretty rare to stand next to a smelly person at the place I go, I think we must all shower after and use fresh everything for the next visit.
I have been known to run to the shop and get milk on the way home from my sweat out, but I do the hoodie thing and try to get in and out un noticed. You can guarantee I see all kinds of people I know when I do that Blush

EldritchCleavage · 24/05/2012 11:29

Agree with California-wearing make-up while exercising is something I've never understood.
I walk home and shower there, but I certainly wouldn't fuss about with air and make-up before leaving the gym.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 24/05/2012 11:50

YABU!!! I go straight from my spin session back to work, I dont have time to have a shower after. I get back to work, cool down and then go to the loo, freshen up and get changed!

Sometimes if I am really sweaty I might give my hair a quick blast with the hairdryer .....never thought anything of it to be honest!

chemiseblair · 24/05/2012 12:06

YADNBU

I genuinely don't understand how anyone could, after doing so much exercise they are sweating enough to soak their hair (and for me this 'any exercise' as I seem to have some sort of overactive sweat system) then think 'mmm, what I'll do is blow hot air in my face' -urgh! Shock

I can't ever dry my hair at the gym because the idea of blowing hot air on myself even after a shower to cool down is too awful. My gym is stupidly warm for some reason but even so, that just sounds horrid.

I suppose it's possible it's people with hair extensions who can't wash their hair or else they make them fall out? In which case that is totally grim anyway- imagine all the germs that must be teeming in them and then getting rubbed on their clothes/pillows/etc. Blooargh.

chemiseblair · 24/05/2012 12:07

(I am definitely not a clean freak and don't shower every day- there's no way I'd try and dry my hair at the gym rather than washing it, though)

Ormiriathomimus · 24/05/2012 12:10

Yes, it's grim!

going home sweaty and then jumping in the shower is fine. After all that is all I do when I've been running, but blowdrying suggests they are going on somewhere else.

ripsishere · 24/05/2012 12:15

I had no idea that hair extensions fell out if they were washed
I don't think I've ever read anything as horrible as someone posting about a nudey woman who either sat on a plastic stool with a bare vagine or used the hand dryer to sort her fanny out. It was one or the other.
In order that i won't be offended I don't go to gyms Grin

IAmNotACowbag · 24/05/2012 12:39

You can wash your hair with extensions in if they are glued not clipped in.

pictish · 24/05/2012 12:41

Why do you care OP?

CrispyCod · 24/05/2012 12:46

I wait until I get home until I have a shower. I'm only a 5-10 minute drive away so it's worth waiting until I can use my own lovely clean facilities!

Sometimes I pop to the supermarket straight afterwards but I don't look sweaty and I know I don't smell either. It takes a while for the bacteria to form to make the sweat smell and I'm usually home by then.

I wouldn't dream of putting make up over a sweaty face though, that's just minging!

doormat · 24/05/2012 12:49

there are some gipping ppl out there
