thank you

For all of you old enough to remember life before the remote control!

The remote control, one of the best inventions IMO Grin

As the youngest child I would always be the one who had to get up to change switch over channel.

Oh I am so old Grin

My brother fashioned a bamboo stick, sellotaped to another bamboo stick for length, with a wire loop at the end, to turn the TV knobs round, from the comfort of the sofa.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 22/05/2012 23:16

I would pay respect, as I do remember life before the remote control (remember we got a new VHS videa with a "remote" control that plugged in to the video and left a wire trailing along the floor, causing many a happy accident Grin)

BUT since the remote control seems to be magnetically attached to DH, and enables that channel-flicking that drives me mad during the ads, I'm starting to wonder if it was such a great invention after all!

oreocrumbs · 22/05/2012 23:19

LineRunner I did that too Grin. It didn't have a loop at the end as our tv was push buttons and I just used to prod it!! Disclaimer tv remotes had been invented by then we just lost ours.

I only remember having to get up to change the channel at aged Aunts houses, but the remote control guy still deserves my respect. He was like the olden days Steve Jobs Smile

May he rest in peace.

WorraLiberty · 22/05/2012 23:24

Jooly I remember the trailing wires from the video too Grin

I also remember the first time I saw a colour TV at my Uncle's house...everyone looked orange Grin

Ironically as I live in Essex...everyone looks orange when I leave the house.

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 22/05/2012 23:35

remotes? do you not remember black and white and the joy of 3 channels, all of which shut down for the afternoon (perhaps it was only the one with anything remotely interesting to a seven year old)

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 23/05/2012 14:56

no but I do 'watch with mother' at lunchtimes when I came home from school for a cooked dinner.... at lunchtime!

TheUnMember · 23/05/2012 15:40

I remember our first remote control. It was about the size of a house brick with just one doorbell sized button that clicked up to the next channel. You had to go through all of them to get back to the start, which wasn't so bad as there were only 6 on the tv (3 of which weren't tuned in).

JosieZ · 23/05/2012 15:43

I wish they'd never been invented - getting up and down to change channels everytime the dratted adverts come on would have made me slim and fit.
