Is fanny a swear word in the UK? I said to me kids yesterday, stop fannying around and get on with,...blah blah And they were HORRIFIED that I had said a swear word. Help! I have definitely said that phrase in the office in the past.

Urban Dictionary meaning -

  1. Fannying around
To saunter around or to not take something seriously. Stop fannying around and do your homework!

it must be ok then Wink

I'm really sorry but the imaginary child called cunt made me spit out my coffee all over my keyboard Grin childish I know.

Fannying = fart-arsing

Isn't the English language full of shades of meaning. I ws going to say that in my family we would talk about "arsing about" but that implies being more boisterous and silly that "fannying around" which implies indecision and lack of concertration and effort.

In Scotland you might get referred to as a fanny if you are being stupid Grin. It can also be a diminutive of Frances.

Ye cannae call her Fanny Irn Bru advert

Absolutely not a swear word. It’s in common usage in this house.

Didn't realise frigging meant masturbating and I once said it in front of kids. I thought it was the same as freakin'.
I said bugger a couple of times too in polite company as I thought it was something to do with a bug. The joys of being a foreigner!
Anyway, fanny is nowhere near as bad as the c word.
And your colleagues will put it down to English not being your first language.
