AIBU - neighbour's noise

So my neighbour doesn't appear to work and is obsessed with doing up his (many) cars. The problem is that our small garden is right next to his drive and garage. He often has the radio on full blast (I can hear it in my house) and is revving engines etc most of the day. We've had to approach them about various things in the past (a faulty outside light/loud parties) and as a result, they seemingly don't like us.

So what do I do about the radio? Leave it or go around and face them again...

His work may be buying old cars, and selling them on, so YABU as you didn't need to state that, as if he were some kind of bum.

YANBU, about the noise however.

Don't you need a permit to mend cars on private property?

Eh - I really don't think I suggested that he was a bum! Simply that he's always around and yes, I have wondered whether it was his work which if it is is a real problem due to the very small distance between us and his garage..

I'd have a word about the noise, I'd have to, can't bear noisy, inconsiderate neighbours. Perhaps he doesn't realise that you can hear it inside your house. Do you think he'll be OK if you just asked him to turn it down a bit or do you think it would cause too much hassle to be worth it?

noise nuisance is dealt with by your local Environmental Health dept at the council. they would also liaise with the planning dept as if he is running a business from home then he may need planning permission or economic development help to find himself a small unit to run his business from. if he buys old cars does them up and sells them then this is a business and liable for tax etc. Re the noise the definition in law of what constitutes a noise nuisance is pretty tricky - lots of case law on it but basically it is what any reasonable person would find annoying. your local EHO if you complain will keep it confidential and write to him re the radio and the business aspect. you will then be asked to keep a v accurate noise diary of when you hear it, where in the house and how it disturbs your daily life. ie you could put"in the kitchen and couldnt hear myself speaking on the phone" or "in the garden and came in because of the music which went on at Xam and off at Ypm" If you make a complaint and you want it resolved then you will have to be prepared to see it through. its up to you how annoying you find it as to whether or not it is worth it.
