The ones I've had to read on a loop all day long.

I know it's part of motherhood but there are only so many times you can read a book which is mainly one word

banana to that imo

glenthebattleostrich · 20/05/2012 20:18

YANBU, at last count DD had 75 books yet she still only wants to read a book about a fooking monkey. Monkey scares the crocodile, monkey scares the hippos. Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhh Monkey should be eaten by the fooking crocodile

Wolfiefan · 20/05/2012 20:18

The mouse took a stroll......

browneyesblue · 20/05/2012 20:19

Sirzy · 20/05/2012 20:19

Can I hide tiddler and elmer with it please!!

laurenamium · 20/05/2012 20:19

YANBU. I hate that book, it's pointless!

Sirzy · 20/05/2012 20:20

Oh yes Wolfie, and the gruffalo!

Chrestomanci · 20/05/2012 20:22

Argh! I have a permanent sore throat because the first few times I read The Gruffalo he had a deep growly voice, which I am now called upon to replicate many times a day...

We accidentally lose books on top of the wardrobe all the time. It keeps me sane and he always seems happy enough after we've had a quick hunt and I swear blindly that perhaps grandad has borrowed it , to move on to something else.

DoesItComeInBlack · 20/05/2012 21:04

Bloody Monkey Puzzle and Tiddler and The Gruffalo.
"I've lost my mum."
"Hush little monkey don't you cry I'll help you find her," said butterfly, "lets have a think how big is she."
"She's big," said the Monkey, "Bigger than me."
Julia Bloody Donaldson has a lot to answer for..... Grrrr.

BornSicky · 20/05/2012 21:09

The witch had a cat and a very tall hat...

Slinky malinki was blacker than black, a stalking and lurking adventurous cat...

And... Scarface Claw! The toughest Tom in town! Meowooooofzzz!

I have hidden them under the sofa cushions with a very scrappy copy of the gruffalo.

Sirzy · 20/05/2012 21:12

Each peach pear plum, I spy tom thumb. Tom Thumb in the cupboard...

I could carry on and recite the whole bloody book but I wont!

Nacknick · 20/05/2012 21:14

The smartest sodding giant in town...

Tee2072 · 20/05/2012 21:14

George was a giant. The scruffiest giant in town....

FallenCaryatid · 20/05/2012 21:14

Wise move OP.
I can still recite my DD's favourite books by heart, about half a dozen of them burned into my brain forever.
DD is now...21.
I wish I'd hidden some of them!

Tee2072 · 20/05/2012 21:14

X-post, Nack!

Brightspark1 · 20/05/2012 21:17

DD is 15 and I can still recite chunks of Elmer, sad day when DCs were too old to read to. Sigh...

juneybean · 20/05/2012 21:18

I do Gruffalo off by heart with three random animals chosen on the spur of the moment by the kids. Tonight we had a pig, a chipmunk and a velociraptor. Makes it more fun.

Magneto · 20/05/2012 21:23

In the great green room there was a telephone and a red balloon and a cow jumping over the moon.

I don't actually have to see that bloody book to read it anymore, which is good as ds likes being in control of the pages. We have to stop at the three little bears sitting on chairs and say "Grr" and the cow jumping over the moon "Mooo" then he has to go "squeak squek" every time he sees the mouse and "meow" every time he sees the kittens.

What bugs me is that some of the rhymes don't quite fit. I sometimes recite it in an american accent to see if it sounds better. It doesn't.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 20/05/2012 22:41

Yanbu. There are certain books where the words are so well known that in fact the book is only a prop. Gruffalo is one, bear hunt another, three little pigs, jack and the beanstalk, I have an extensive repertoire. It is a useful talent when driving and the kids ds' s run out of battery though.

kat1885 · 20/05/2012 22:45

I have hidden the gruffalo, monkey puzzle and the very hungry caterpillar. Ds1 has approx 100 books (my mum used to be a teacher and is obsessed with buying him books), the three mentioned are the only ones he asks me to read!

luisgarcia · 21/05/2012 00:28

This is Apple Tree Farm. This is Mrs Boot the Farmer. This is the sound of daddy despairing.

BonnieBumble · 21/05/2012 00:31

I have to read the Osborne Look and Learn books. Slowly losing the will to live...
