about banana purchasing behaviour

or is this bloke - obviously i think he is
In sainsbos tonight, getting a couple of bunches of bananas and this bloke is checking every bunch, and pullling the best banana off each bunch, then sometimes replacing those on the shelf in favour of another, then picking the ends of the stems (approx 1mm presumably to save cashHmm) He had about 6/7 altogether inhis trolley.
His trolley was stuffed with luxury foodstuffs so presume not down to last 5p
Surely if you buy bananas you get a bunch and accept that some might be better than others, or am i the fool and should i be shredding bunches?

I am a bunch shredder. I need the tiny bananas in a variety of colours from green to yellow, for 15mo DS3. He can't manage a large one, and my food waste is only picked up every 2 weeks. I'm not going to waste money buying 15 other bananas just to get 5 small ones in varying states of ripeness!

NinthWave · 18/05/2012 22:41

harbinger what do you do with the stalky bit? Do you just lob it back into the tray thing?

This is a whole new world of curious veg habits for me (Sainsbo delivery driver usually picks mine for me, and does a pretty good job thankfully!)

I am a bunch shredder!! Sorry OP!!

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 18/05/2012 22:57

Maisie, just email your broccoli stems to me Wink

bronze · 18/05/2012 23:01

Yeah man, meet my mate, just call him brocc. Grin

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 18/05/2012 23:11

YABU, it sounds like a brilliant idea that has never occurred to me before.

It also has the added bonus that if lots of people do this, there will be lots of left over single bananas. And when there are lots of left over single bananas, Waitrose fill a plastic fruit and veg bag up with them and sell the lot for 49p so I have an incentive good excuse to make banana bread. Yum.

mumeeee · 19/05/2012 12:31

I'm sometimes a bunch shredder. Don't want to buy bruised overripe bananas. Also DD3 is incredibly fussy about bananas

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/05/2012 12:43

I don't do this but I do snap ginger roots off if I just want a little piece. I assumed everyone did this (who needs a whole hand-sized bit?!) but I got ticked off in Morrisons in Doncaster by someone so vehement about it being rude I have always done it surreptitiously since.

SpottedGurnard · 19/05/2012 12:49

LRD- I just assumed everyone snapped off the little bit of ginger they need. Why would someone need the whole lot??

The person who told you off probably doesn't even know what ginger is Wink

IslaValargeone · 19/05/2012 12:52

I have seen someone armed with a penknife in order to cut of unwanted broccoli stalks.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/05/2012 12:53

Grin What, you mean maybe she thought it was some kind of veg you cooked whole? Bleugh!

I would so buy all these discarded broccoli stalks everyone else doesn't want, btw - they're the best bit!

Oakmaiden · 19/05/2012 14:38

I always assumed that was normal ginger behaviour.

I can understand about discaring bruised bananas too. Or separating a bunch that has too many. But not cherry picking the "best" ones by handling them all.

NorbertDentressangle · 19/05/2012 14:50

I break bits off the massive pieces of ginger (I thought that was the norm/acceptable) but I don't break off individual bananas from a bunch to make my selection, I just grab a bunch that looks OK.

PMSL at someone going armed with a pen-knife to cut off unwanted stalks of broccoli ! Next they'll be peeling the potatoes and carrots before getting them weighed

OvO · 19/05/2012 14:54

I always choose the best bananas from different bunches. I thought everyone did. Blush

OvO · 19/05/2012 14:56

Though I don't man handle loads, honest! I just pick a couple of good ones from one bunch then another couple from another bunch. I don't do 6 from 6 different bunches.

sparkle12mar08 · 19/05/2012 14:59

I always snap the stalks of brocolli ever since Jamie Oliver suggested it years ago - he actually said "why pay for something you're not going to use?" and it also snaps where the sugars are turning starchy, just like asparagus does, so you know you're getting the fresh part of the plant.

I just grab the nearest bunch of bananas.

I like broccoli stems, so that's not a problem. I do break ginger.

My gran used to painstakingly break the stems off all the mushrooms she was buying and leave them on the shelf.

mrsws · 19/05/2012 21:39

I dont think i have ever thought about the choosing of my bananas until now - I tend to get slightly green ones so they last a bit longer. However i do now feel really sorry for all the battered and bruised bananas seperated from the herd Sad

This thread has made me chuckle at how bonkers having kids has made us all - thank you x Grin
