to think people will not nick our herbs

We live in a small flat but we have a large shared outside space. Kind of a roof terrace I suppose but it extends a long way. There are 4 flats and its not really very nice as its tiled so people don't hang around out there.

I want a herb garden but our flats private balcony has DS's garden toys on it. Its not big enough for both. I suggested putting the herbs on the front but DP says people will 'nick' them.

Really? People steal herbs now, do they? Besides I don't mind people having a bit of my chives every now and again. Grin

We share a garden with 8 other houses, I have a herb garden & small veg plot in one of the flowerbeds & nobody's pinched anything yet!
If DP really isn't keen can you put window boxes at the back?

Fresh chives are lovely, think I've picked off & eaten more than I've used for cooking Grin

He is worried about 'hurricanes' knocking the window boxes off. We live on a main road too so I think they might get a bit ick if they were that side.

Sod him, he's obviously mad, isn't he? I'll put the boxes out tonight!

It's possible that people would'nt recognise them as herbs if they were quite big and in pots. We have a block paved drive at the front of our house and to make it look a bit less boring we have shrubs in pots and tubs with herbs, so I expect the neighbours think they are some form of alpine plants.

If your DP means people would just nick any plants that looked pretty, could you grow your herbs in window boxes attached to your balcony or in hanging baskets?
