Just that really. Bag of lentils (unopened) and I've noticed the date is 2009 . Should I throw them out or are lentils never ending?

I think I've got an older one that I'm keeping to make a mosaic with some day

That recipe looks gorgeous. But I don't think I would use lentils that are 3 yrs out of date. I have no logical reason for that though.

Yes, definitey a best before, doubt you'd get dried pulses with a use by. But there's best before and then there's "You've got to be kidding"

pre-cook the lentils first, then use as the recipe dictates

Seriously though, lentils - urgh (nearly as bad as that A&E thread that's live at the moment if you ask me).

Thread murderer that I am, I hasten to add, I'd eat them, and I wasn't being sarky. With a ham shank, I'd make pea whack. 'Tis regional, but the copious amounts of salt in the shank'd sterilise any rogue wildlife. That and ham shanks and farts would have me rolling about with tears of mirth obscuring my vision, which is probably for the best.
