Management who set 'chat' targets are inconsiderate.
Customers are miserable.
People who smile and chat are intrusive.
People who ignore you are rude.

You We are all unreasonable.

we should all just shop online and never come into contact with anybody ever again Grin

ChaosTrulyReigns · 14/05/2012 09:28

Do you work on a checkout knowitall?

Mrsjay · 14/05/2012 09:31

I think its a reaction to the supermarket chatty cashier thread chaos .

fatmummy35 · 14/05/2012 09:36

FFS this is the 4th thread on this subject in the last few days. Do you work on a checkout knowitall

Why start a thread about a thread which was actually about another thread.

Angry
Mrsjay · 14/05/2012 09:39

Its the topic of the week

glasscompletelybroken · 14/05/2012 09:57

I try to join in with the freindly chat because I know they are just doing their job and they have secret shoppers who can report them if they don't do this.

However - if they will insist that their checkout staff talk to the customers then supermarkets should train them in the art of polite conversation. This is an actual conversation I had with a girl on the checkout recently:

girl - "Doing anything nice this weekend?"
me - "Yes actually my daughter has just had a baby so I am going to see her after I've done the shopping".
girl - "Oh lovely, is it her first baby?"
me - "No, it's her third actually"
girl - "Really? Do they all have the same Dad?"

I was speechless!

glenthebattleostrich · 14/05/2012 10:00

I've tried the shopping on line thing thinking I won't have to chat to people, the bloody delivery driver had the cheek to not only ring the doorbell but also offered to take the shopping into the kitchen. He asked how I was and was all pleasant and friendly, the bastard.

I will be complaining to Sainsbury's about their pleasant helpful staff!

Lovelynewboots · 14/05/2012 10:02

Glasscompletelybroken just snorted coffee out my nose reading your post.

Kayano · 14/05/2012 10:05

Shopping online is unreasonable

Delivery driver should carry everything in and put it away
Delivery driver shouldn't make eye contact

Etc

You can't win

AlpinePony · 14/05/2012 10:05

How common! The girls at Waitrose would never make such an assumption re: paternity. Clearly you shop in Asda, birken'ead! ;)

AlpinePony · 14/05/2012 10:06

Actually that's really making me laugh, I think is have replied with "yep, all the same dad, fancy eh!?".

glasscompletelybroken · 14/05/2012 10:08

It was asda...

Kaekae · 14/05/2012 10:13

Sainsbury's staff have to now inform customers how much they have saved, I just want to get ou,t not have a big conflab. I do talk to them though as like mentioned they are just doing their job.

Mrsjay · 14/05/2012 10:21

DD workjs in sainsbury she has to tell them how much points they have or the saving imagine her having to do her job eh Wink Oh glens next time ask for shopping to be left at gate then you can go out like a ninga pick the shopping up and then nobody will talk to you , Grin

glasscompletelybroken · 14/05/2012 10:26

I do mine on-line sometimes but can't get my head around the random substitutions I seem to get. I don't know who is "picking" my shopping but I do know they have never shopped in real life for themselves!

bewitchedandbewildered · 14/05/2012 10:43

We live in an automated disposable society. If you don't like chatting to the chatty staff then shop online or use the self service check out. Problem solved. You don't have to/need to interact with anyone in life if you don't want to.

glenthebattleostrich · 14/05/2012 18:37

Asda did great substitutions, I once ordered nappies for DD and they sent Tenna Ladies. Also a pack of malted milk biscuits instead of a pint of milk. It was really exciting getting my shopping, I didn't know what would turn up!!

I'm liking the idea of ninja style collection from the bottom of the street!
