Poxy Child Conundrum

I want to know what you'd do and if I was BU.

My 4.3 DS has Chicken Pox. He's also got a terrible cough and is asthmatic. He was due his review at the Doctor's today so I called to tell them he has the pox and they said to come in anyway. When I got there, I asked to be put into a side room as I didn't feel comfortable waiting with everyone else.

The GP gave me a prescription which needed filling straight away, so I drove into the village centre and left DS in the car parked in a bay at the side of the road - I could see him from the window of the shop.

Coming out, an older lady stopped me and said I shouldn't have left him in the car, so I explained that he had CP and she said it didn't matter and I should be ashamed of myself.

So as IBU to leave him in the car for 5 minutes, in full view of me, to get his medication? WWYD?

YANBU, I would have done it, provided by DS was OK with it, I assume you were. How does she think we get petrol?

HappyJustToBe · 10/05/2012 17:28

I think YANBU for the reasons as you could see him the whole time and he is old enough to understand where you are and that you will be back soon etc. Her stopping you with such words of wisdom just delayed your returning to him so I am not sure what she wanted to achieve!

Safmellow · 10/05/2012 17:30

YANBU. Nosey old bat.

Tiddlyompompom · 10/05/2012 17:33

YANBU will bells on! DS has the pox too, and everyone's been laying it on so thick about not putting vulnerable people at risk that we've been under total house arrest for the week, and that's fine. Very sensible to leave him in the car IMO, as surely the chemists of all places could have been full of people with low immune systems.
She was being a bossy old witch, and no doubt if you'd taken him in one of her contemporaries would have had a go about that! You can't win with them.

Noqontrol · 10/05/2012 17:41

I'd have told her to mind her own business Grin if you could see the car then YANBU.

TheThingUpstairs · 10/05/2012 17:46

YANBU, sounds like you were very sensible.

CallMeAl · 10/05/2012 18:09

I leave my children in the car all the time, no pox at all. You should have told her to keep her beak out.

ragged · 10/05/2012 18:10

There's no making some people happy.

AnyoneforTurps · 10/05/2012 18:20

YANBU. The pharmacy could well have had immunosuppressed patients there, waiting for prescriptions. Chickenpox can be fatal to them - you did exactly the right thing.

halcyondays · 10/05/2012 19:31

Yanbu

thebody · 10/05/2012 20:39

Silly old bat

urbanproserpine · 10/05/2012 20:50

YANBU. I have done same with my DS today (5 and also with chickenpox) - left him in the car to get meds, then left him on the car to go and get nice food to make him eat as he has pox in his mouth. There was simply no other way to do it...

I have 3YO twins too and there is no way of 'doing' twin babies and a two year old with out the odd 'hopping out of the car for petrol' type event.

Anyway when I was a kid people did that all the time...

madmouse · 10/05/2012 20:53

You did the right thing. She was too far up her own ass to backpedal once you mentioned the CP.

He's quite safe in your car as long as he can't get out and others can't get in. And unless you live somewhere very much not here it wasn't hot.

YANBU! I would have done the same since you could see him.

SuperTressy · 10/05/2012 21:21

YANBU. If you'd have taken him inside, someone else would have moaned. You can't win in some situations :)

oooohhhhyes · 10/05/2012 21:47

YANBU She was being arsy without good reason. Tsk, old people today...no manners and nosy to boot :)

Tiddlyompompom · 10/05/2012 23:04

Gosh, another unanimous YANBU! How lovely, is there a full moon? Grin
