To not want to drill into the walls...!

Just spent some money getting the upstairs of our house professionally decorated. We have a load of kids books that need storage. AIBU not to want dh to fit shelves to the wall, for fear of messing them up with loads of botched drill holes, when a bookcase would do equally well and we have the space for it?

Bookcase vs. shelves. What a boring Sat night conversation, sorry...!

Bookcase would still need drilling to the wall.

How big are your kids? If you can't trust them not to climb the bookcases you need to fix them to the wall anyway...

Our bookcase is not drilled to the wall, why does it have to be?

PeanutButterOnly · 05/05/2012 19:55

Oh ok, good point about fixing bookcase to wall. They are 2.9, 5 and 7. I think it's unlikely the 2 yr old would climb but you never know.

If you can afford a professional decorator, surely you can afford a professional handyman to fit a few shelves?

I once caught my 7 year old climbing a huge set of shelves to get at a toy near the top. His weight could easily have brought them down, and he would have stood no chance at all.

Drilling properly is really not that hard, I'm sure your dh would do it fine. Unless he is especially inept and very clumsy, I don't know why you wouldn't trust him. Does he think he can do it ok?

Thanks all, I think I'm just traumatised by crumbling plaster in previous Victorian house. Yeah, he can do it, or I should myself really. We've spent a lot on the house so we need to start doing some stuff ourselves rather than getting people in.

one hole for book case, doesn't need to be that accurate for a furniture tie, verses several holes for shelves. book cases can be shifted arround if you need to reaange funiture. shelves attached to the wall aer more difficult to move. (and filling lots of holes when you do...)
