.. to think this is a little bit 'eeewww'?

I just popped into a small local shop, which used to be just a butchers but now has a small grocery and fruit and veg section. I picked up a hand of bananas, and put them on the counter.

The butcher was at the chopping board slicing up some very juicy (ie: bloody) pieces of steak, with his bare hands (I mean, with a sharp knife, but with no gloves - he obviously wasn't karate-chopping the steak up!). He turned, picked up the bananas to weigh them. Still with bare, blood covered hands.

Now, I'm not a vegetarian, I eat meat, am not squeamish at the sight of blood, and because I'm not a lunatic I don't eat banana skins. So why do I find this a bit 'eeewww'? AIBU to think that perhaps he should have used a bag or something to not get blood all over my 'nanas? (he also passed me my change with the same hands, so I hope Dracula doesn't pass by and get a whiff of my purse..)

Please note, this is only a light hearted AIBU, I'm not planning to get the local papers involved or anything!

That is minging. (But I am a veggie so maybe not impartial.)

squoosh · 02/05/2012 14:32

Cross contamination ahoy!

Gargula · 02/05/2012 14:33

Well I am a humourless vegetarian and this would piss me right off.

But then, I wouldn't be gracing a butchers with my presence anyway!

WhaleOilBeefHookedIWill · 02/05/2012 14:33

Whether you eat the skin or not is irrelevant- he isnt adhering to food handling rules.

Shutupanddrive · 02/05/2012 14:35

That is disgusting, I can't believe you still bought the bananas! I would have told him to shove it! Shock

thebody · 02/05/2012 14:35

No that's not good tbh I would give the environmental health dept a quick call.

lighthearted? Shouldn't be, that is fucking disgusting!!

TheRhubarb · 02/05/2012 14:39

You ain't gonna eat the banana skin though are you?

As a meat eater I'd be more concerned that a bit of that horrid yellow fruit had contaminated my lovely juicy steak.

eurochick · 02/05/2012 14:42

Ewwww. I wouldn't be shopping in there again.

By the by, it always astonishes me that on Saturday Kitchen so many of the guest chefs have to be reminded to wash their hands to prevent cross contamination. WTF happens when a tv camera is not pointing at them and somone is not reminding them on live national television to do it???

Silverlace · 02/05/2012 14:44

YANBU. Very poor food hygiene.

Reminds me of when I went to the fish counter in a large supermarket and asked for some fresh fish. While the young man was picking up my fish with his bare hands I noticed they were covered in weeping sores!

I didn't say anything to him but took it straight to customer services and explained in no uncertain terms why I would not be buying g it. Yuk.

lisaro · 02/05/2012 14:45

Someone could put those bananas in their children's lunch box. The child picks it up.... You see where this is going. He has absolutely no hygiene standards at all the filthy sod. I really do feel this is a matter for environmental health. Angry

StateofConfusion · 02/05/2012 14:45

No, that's not right at all. Awful.

Gargula, I hope you didn't read a slur against vegetarians in my post, I didn't intend one? I was simply explaining that I do come into contact with raw meat in my eating /cooking processes.

That is disgusting, and a clear breach of food safety

halcyondays · 02/05/2012 16:02

Yuck, I wouldn't have bought the bananas after he did that.Shock disgusting and environmental health would take a very dim view.

purpledragonfruit · 02/05/2012 16:10

It's pretty ewwwww if you think about it, so don't. Living overseas in the arse end of nowhere I have my head in the sand about many issues like that. In the market where I buy fish the fish man skins and guts and fillets my fish then gives me my change with blood all over his hands. I always make sure the next person (usually the pineapple person) gets those notes.

The last time it was particularly ewwww as the blood was dripping from the bag the fish was in and I had to wipe it off in the toilets when I met my friend for coffee. I've never got sick from all this ewwww though so I wouldn't worry.

picnicbasketcase · 02/05/2012 16:13

I'm not a veggie either, and would not be happy about it, very unhygienic for him to touch anything with blood on his hands.

AmberLeaf · 02/05/2012 16:17

I think probably every time I get meat in the butchers they give me my change from a bloody hand and hand the bag over from the same bloody hand.

ThreadWatcher · 02/05/2012 16:17

I would have refused to buy them and gone home to call enviro health dept - yuck.
I wouldn't just ignore it - tis revolting

Goolash · 02/05/2012 16:50

Cross contamination and very poor hygiene.
