ok so am on my own last few days (dp away) and ds has tonsilitis very bad high temp thats hard to keep under control and has thrown up numerous times. so went to chemist after going to doc for second time in 4 days cos its in his ear now to stock up on calpol and nurofen

doc advised to alternate the two every 2 hours, antibiotic 3 times a day and to try teedex at night instead of calpol to help him sleep.

chemist would not sell me both calpol and teedex together. i asked can it go seperately in different transactions on the till she said no its still the same person. i said so that means i have to go miles to another chemist as i need them ... explained doc advise and how sick ds was.

another woman offered to buy it for me but the chemist again said no because she knew i was getting it. i was getting pretty pissed off and said "surely some common sense wouldnt go astray, other chemists have been obliging at times .... its a bit silly". chemist said she was just doing her job and that she cant sell 2 lots of paracetemol to me.

i said"fine" and walked out door not hiding i was pissed off and had to come straight home as ds was like an anti christ. have to make the trip later again to a different chemist and bring him back out into this miserable cold weather.

aibu? or could she at least use common sense and ask a few questions and make her own mind up besides following silly legislation

Agree that it seems ridiculous, because you could go to five different places and buy more paracetamol and they'd be none the wiser. But if that's what they're told they have to do...

YANBU to be pissed off but can they actually get in trouble? I have had this problem before and feel your pain.

diddl · 27/04/2012 14:47

But you don´t need both?

I can why you are annoyed, but you´ll have to stock up Calpol another time/somewhere else?

scuzy · 27/04/2012 14:47

exactly picnic but some places do use their own discretion! not going there again i tell you.

I've never heard of teedex but YANBU, I have bought both Calpol and Medised in a single transaction and was simply advised how to manage the dosage.

BartletForAmerica · 27/04/2012 14:52

It has cut overdoses: www.freakonomics.com/2011/05/17/why-cant-you-buy-a-big-bottle-of-headache-pills-in-england/

A pharmacist, at their discretion, CAN sell you up to 100 tablets.

scuzy · 27/04/2012 14:55

well i am in ireland. teedex is also paracetemol but has antihistimane as well to relieve sleeplessness. i only wanted to use it at night time not have him drowsy all day. just silly ... seriously what do they think we will do?

It's totally mad because I can do to both chemist and Tesco's and buy paracetamol at each. I wouldn't be surprised if the spar and the petrol station have some too.

Anyway if I was that desperate there's a railway line and a river.

GeraldineHoHoHobergine · 27/04/2012 15:06

You would need to drink a fair amount of calpol to get the required amount for an overdose anyway i think, its 120mg per 5 ml isnt it, so you would need the whole bottle and then some anyway.

BartletForAmerica · 27/04/2012 15:15

startail, if you really want to kill yourself, you still can. What this is stopping is the impulsive paracetamol overdose of someone who justs swallows all the tablets they have at home, then gets liver failure as a result. You've never watched someone die of liver failure due to an impulsive overdose (just broken up with boyfriend, thinks she'll scare him by a 'small' overdose), I imagine. I have and it is not pretty.
