I got a letter from HSBC a month or so ago which said I had had PPI on a loan in 2006 and please could I fill in this form and send it back so they could investigate whether it had been mis-sold.

I was a bit confused as I was pretty certain I hadn't had PPI on the loan, but I thought good on HSBC for writing to their customers and alerting them. They wrote just after it had been 6 years since I took the loan out, which may be relevant as I think there's a 6 year cut off.

I took the form into the bank and have heard nothing since. When I phoned them the lady I spoke to said that they've lost all the paperwork relating to my loan so they don't know whether I had PPI. They are looking for it and will get back to me.

The same paperwork which, presumably, revealed to them a month ago that I did have it. Although I was almost certain I didn't. I filled in the application online and don't have the paperwork anymore either as it was paid off years ago and I didn't think I'd need it. Of course, because I'm a twat.

Wtf is going on?

If you're sure you don't have it, them losing a bit of paperwork is a bit of a non-issue?

But that's the thing, I'm not sure. I was sure, but then they told me I did and confused me! I don't understand how they could tell me I had a claim that needed investigating and then lose all the information that enabled them to tell me that in the first place. Part of me is wondering whether they put it on my policy and it just wasn't written down anywhere. But that doesn't sound very plausible?! I'm just confused and annoyed.

You could be out of time after 6 years but we're only just into 2012 really!

This was on the Breakfast News this morning, apparently if you do not have any paperwork relating to the loans/insurance then you need to contact Experian or any other credit reference agency who will have the details. It's probably worth a try as HSBC did write to you. Can't believe they've lost the paperwork tho' - or can I, knowing the reputation they have Sad

Good luck with the search!

I don't know what paperwork they need though. I've given them the account number etc, so presumably it's their own stuff they need. I just wish I had a piece of paper that said 'you have PPI' or 'you do not have PPI'. Now I'm thinking about it I can't remember what paperwork I EVER had as it was all online and I'm paperless for statements etc. There must have been something I suppose.
