To think it quite normal to skip breakfast

McHappyPants2012 · 22/04/2012 19:16

Settle an argument for me.

My dh thinks it is not normal for people to skip breakfast, he thinks I am weird because I have never had breakfast.

Unless I am on holiday I never have breakfast.. I have to be up and about for two or three hours before I feel hungry. My husband is the same too..

I ate breakfast as a kid, but once I was a teen I could never be bothered..

scuzy · 22/04/2012 19:17

many do it but its not healthy.

its not normal for me to skip breakfast. but i know alot of people that cant stomach eating until midmorning.

cornflowers · 22/04/2012 19:18

I often skip breakfast, then have an early lunch. I would never skip my morning coffee, although presumably that doesn't count!

AWomanCalledHorse · 22/04/2012 19:19

I only ate breakfast whilst I was pg. Going to be changing that when DS notices food.
My mum didn't 'do' mornings when I lived at home so she never made my breakfast, guess I'm just used to waiting until lunch time?

Pollykitten · 22/04/2012 19:19

it's up to you, isn't it? I wake up ravenous so I couldn't, but horses for courses, I say. It is a central tenet of the Nutrition Faith Cult (of which I confess to being a member) - maybe your DH wants in depth breakfast chat in the morning?!

MagsAloof · 22/04/2012 19:21

I skip breakfast about 3 times a week, but have to then eat a snack late morning or have an early lunch, or I'd feel awful. I would rather eat breakfast, but sometimes I just don't have the time.

It isn't weird to skip breakfast, but it isnt a good habit.

EdlessAllenPoe · 22/04/2012 19:21

just not hungry in the morning. ever.

only during morning sickness.

CMOTDibbler · 22/04/2012 19:23

DH never eats breakfast (well not within an hour of getting up at least), wheras I want to eat as soon as I get up. Personally, I think its best to listen to your body rather than forcing yourself to eat when you aren't truly hungry for it

Tee2072 · 22/04/2012 19:25

I don't eat the second I get up, I have to wake up first, but I do eat breakfast.

I didn't used to. I have no idea when I changed.

Magneto · 22/04/2012 19:28

I only have an hour between getting up and having to leave for work and I'm just not hungry. I have a cup of tea for breakfast and that's it. At the weekends I'll eat some cereal etc but that's because I can take my time and eat when I'm hungry.

NettoSuperstar · 22/04/2012 19:29

I never eat at breakfast, and only eat lunch perhaps once a month.
I'm not hungry during the day.
I drink lots of tea though.

OldGreyWiffleTest · 22/04/2012 19:32

I, too, never eat breakfast. I used to as a child. Don't eat until lunchtime, ever.

Sassybeast · 22/04/2012 19:32

I am never ever hungry in the morning so rarely have breakfast. Having said that, my eldest has really gone off breakfast over the last few months and it bothers me that she is reluctant to eat before she goes out. Her appetite otherwise is great and I can hardly make her eat brekkie when I don't I suppose...

ShellyBoobs · 22/04/2012 19:36

I don't eat breakfast at home but will sometimes have a couple of slices of toast at about 9.30 when I'm at the office, so maybe 3hrs after I got up in the morning.

When away with work (often) I'll usually have something at the hotel before I start the day, but again it's usually just some toast or whatever morning bread product there is available where I am.

On a weekend it's usually at least 10am before I have anything.

Bue · 22/04/2012 19:39

As a child I couldn't eat breakfast at all, it made me feel sick to eat so early. So my breakfast was snack at morning break.

It was only at uni that I forced myself to start eating it because I was on an eat as much as you like meal plan and wanted to get my money's worth!

But I still can't eat for at least an hour after I get up, so I've always eaten breakfast at work.

redyam · 22/04/2012 20:23

It is actually quite weird not to eat a breakfast.
The meaning of break-fast is to break a fast, a starvation of 8 hours. Your body needs the fuel in order to kick start your metabolism and truly wake up. If you don't eat, then your body stays in the same state as when you are asleep.
Skipping breakfast can lead to all sorts of health problems, and is generally not good. Look it up on google....

Btw I have a bowl of porridge for breakfast, it truly is the king of breakfasts.

giraffesCantDonateBoneMarrow · 22/04/2012 20:25

If I am running late for work then I skip breakfast. But then I will have something at about half 8 at work so I guess that doesn't count as skipping.

I used to skip breakfast at school all the time and I don't think I used to concentrate very well.

NoWayNoHow · 22/04/2012 20:27

It is common for people to skip breakfast, but no, it's not normal. It's bad for your body, bad for your metabolism and can contribute to putting on weight by encouraging unhealthy eating during the rest of the day (eg. not having any breakfast and then consequently being starving at 11 and having a muffin or something equally elevenses-ey, IYKWIM)

SecretNutellaFix · 22/04/2012 20:27

I haven't eaten breakfast on a regular basis since I was about twelve. Cannot stand eating anything until I have been up, awake and active for at least 3 hours. I'll have half a slice of toast if I am on medicines that require me to eat with them, but that is about it.

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 22/04/2012 20:27

I used to hate breakfast. Couldn't eat it. But when dd was little I forced myself to because I wanted to set a good example. Now I can't manage without it. I think it helps me keep slim.

SardineQueen · 22/04/2012 20:35

I don't like to eat until I have been up for a couple of hours, unless on holiday.

halcyondays · 22/04/2012 20:49

I always have breakfast. I only miss it if I'm not feeling well.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 22/04/2012 20:50

I don't eat breakfast unless I'm on holiday or staying away from home.

WorraLiberty · 22/04/2012 20:50

I haven't eaten breakfast since I was a kid, because I have to be up and about for a couple of hours before I can eat.

PatronSaintOfDucks · 22/04/2012 20:51

I love the few minutes of calm that I have with my toddler in the mornings before heading for work and nursery - him with his porridge and me with my coffee, toast and marmalade. I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE marmalade. Makes my day.
