the costumes, the reconstructions, the breathless documentaries, the big budget cinema events.

Even after 100 years, I'm not sure a catastrophic shipping accident deserves a carnival?

I'm not surprised by any of this. The human animal is well known for it's love of the morbid. I don't see much of what's happening with this Titanic thing as paying homage at all. It's role playing dressed as a tribute.

It reminds me of the movie Timescape where people would travel back in time as "disaster tourists"

I don't know, all the survivors are now dead, and the Titanic has always been about so much more culturally than a catastrophic shipping accident. It holds a fascination

warmandwooly · 11/04/2012 16:15

Autumn-i have just googled Timescape. Sounds like my type of film.

AutumnSummers · 11/04/2012 17:06

Warm it's fantabulous.

oh god its nauseating - listening to R4 there is a bloody ship reference every five mins which looks like it will pass but then rams into the side of you and causes distress for hours.. its 'oh I was terrified IN THE LIFEBOATS' this and 'oh the lights were so pretty FROM BOW TO STERN' the other goddamit.

The schedule should be 6.00 - 9am 'Yesterday - when the titanic was launched' 9am - 10am 'start the 14th April 1912' then 'Women on, near or who knew someone on the titanic' hour, etc etc its BOOOOORING....

WorriedBetty · 11/04/2012 18:48

AAARGH today's 'woman on or near or who knew someone on the titanic' hour had a travel writer on - unconnected unti;l we had a long slot about HOW SHE HAD SEEN AN ICEBERG.. and then we needed to hear about how it didn't smell like a cucumber and was passive and 'unconcerned with our fate' jesus...

pantaloons · 11/04/2012 18:53

I said exactly the same to DH. I don't have a problem with respectful remembrance, but all the people dressed up in costume to go on the "exact voyage" the Titanic took. I presume it's not exactly the same or there will be a few folk in trouble!

I just think it's grim and wrong tbh.

carernotasaint · 11/04/2012 22:45

i agree. i was watching the bbc news channel today and there were long long queues outside the gift shops on the ship so people could buy titanic memorabilia. Its disrespectful and fucking macabre.

carernotasaint · 11/04/2012 22:48

Bloody hell yes you"re right. I remember Timescape. Hasnt been on TV for ages.

FootprintsInTheSnow · 12/04/2012 03:33
