Where do you feel it is acceptable to wear flip flops? Are they proper shoes or slippers?

DH made this face [buhmm] at me when I decided to weary flip flops to the supermarket the other day (it was sunny, I was wearing a skirt and light jacket). He said I might as well have gone in my PJs.

How strange. I wouldn't wear them to work, or to a formal do, but anything short of that...

warmandwooly · 08/04/2012 18:33

They are your feet!imo you should dress them how you see fit.

TidyDancer · 08/04/2012 18:33

I would wear them to work. I wouldn't wear them to anything you would normally wear smart shoes or trainers to, but apart from that you're fine, and your DH is a weirdo. [buwink]

Catsmamma · 08/04/2012 18:33

could you have worn the flipflops AND your PJs??

i'd wear them anywhere bar work really.....maybe even a formal do, but only if they were lovely flipflops...not the plastic spongey ones

VikingVagine · 08/04/2012 18:34

I feel the need to point out that I'm a teacher and wouldn't wear flip flops to work apart from that time I couldn't be arsed to change my footwear before leaving the house .

flip flops can be worn anywear almost but at times a more formal flip flop might be required!

VikingVagine · 08/04/2012 18:36

He has read the first replies and has declared them invalid because you're all English...

TidyDancer You'd wear flipflops to work? What beach do you work at?

VikingVagine · 08/04/2012 18:38

This is coming from the man who wore faded black jeans with manky white trainers when we first met.

I have worked in 2 offices where flip flops and boardies were not just acceptable, but de riguer!

CrystalMaize · 08/04/2012 18:39

Provided they are jewel-encrusted you should be fine Grin

Catsmamma · 08/04/2012 18:40

i am Scottish if that helps any.

GinPalace · 08/04/2012 18:42

Is he Australian? They go to the supermarket in their bare feet there. [bugrin]

VikingVagine · 08/04/2012 18:43

The offending DH is French (but doesn't own combats or a gun).

OP posts:
scurryfunge · 08/04/2012 18:44

Ah is he called Phillippe Floppe?

Jinsei · 08/04/2012 18:46

Flip flops are "toilet shoes" in some cultures, so I can see where he might be coming from. Grin But I would wear them to the supermarket, practically live in them when it's warm.

I once attempted to climb a mountain in them when I was younger and sillier. Not something I would recommend. Blush

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 08/04/2012 18:46

I might be with your DH on this....especially if you're over 30. I think flip flops belong on the beach...they look sloppy on a grown person.

GinPalace · 08/04/2012 18:47

scurryfunge [bugrin]

pointythings · 08/04/2012 18:47

I'm Dutch and I have worn upmarket flip-flops to work (though I do wear more formal shoes if we are having visiting dignitaries/interviews/major meetings etc.)

And anyone who tells me I can't wear flip-flops to the supermarket will get their posterior kicked. I wouldn't wear PJs to the shops, though - but then you didn't! I think you should send your DH to do all the grocery shopping from now on, and to ensure that he goes out in his 3-piece suit, with silk hankie in the pocket, suitable hat and perfectly polished shoes (polished by him, of course).

Unless and until he does this, he can shut up keep his opinions to himself. [bugrin]

OurPlanetNeptune · 08/04/2012 18:47

I have to agree with your DH. I would not wear flip flops (I assume you mean the rubber ones) unless on a beach/by the pool. Sandals are or ballet flats are better. Grin

btw, I'm not English.

I wear flip flops in summer with everything, but they are Havianas. Grin

Those and my Birkenstocks are staples when it is hot.

GinPalace · 08/04/2012 18:49

Obviously as a french person he will have discarded his faded black jeans with manky white trainers long ago and assigned them to his ill-spent youth days his finger on the style pulse - listen to him.

In reality I think it depends how you wear said flipflops and what they are like. I have some horrible ones I bought online - didn't realise they are a cloth material (didn't look it) so get dirty soon as look at em and I wouldn't wear those for anything except paddling at the seaside!

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 08/04/2012 18:52

Just asked my DH and he said "wear what you bloody like and ignore the snobs"

But he's Australian so your DH will discount him to. Grin

lisaro · 08/04/2012 18:52

Beach only, it seems a bit er well slatternly to wear flip flops elsewhere.
