to buy my wedding dress

from an online site that is obviously a chinese company copying designer dresses?

There are several reasons not to - the high chance of child labour and poor working conditions, the fact they are essentially stealing a design and the chance that it'll be poor quality.

but the dress is perfect and I don't know how to find out who the original designer is...

Dolly couture dresses take up to 12 weeks to arrive, plus you'd want it about 6 weeks before the wedding for fittings - so you've got plenty of time. I would say try it on though, it's fairly unusual for brides to order the dress they like best in a picture - not unheard of, but unusual, so if you can fit in a trying-on session then it's a good idea. I would aim to have ordered your dress by 6 months before the wedding.

maddening · 04/04/2012 20:55

Yes, you can pm me on here or contact me through the website - whatever suits.

I bought mine from a Chinese seller on Ebay. I didn't pay duty, it was custom made and I absolutely loved it. The dresses here have got so over expensive that it is no surprise that people look elsewhere.

Heswall · 04/04/2012 22:19

Honestly did Mary what's her name teach you nothing, buy British and kick start OUR economy.

Rhubarbgarden · 04/04/2012 22:44

Emsyj did you used to be on the YAYW site?!

emsyj · 05/04/2012 11:15

"Emsyj did you used to be on the YAYW site?!"

Yes indeed! Grin

I bought my daughters prom dress off a Chinese seller on Ebay. I was really worried incase it turned out to be a huge mistake but the dress was BEAUTIFUL. Its hung up in my bedroom now and I can't stop looking at it - it cost just over 50 quid!!

The week before I ordered it I took her to a prom dress shop - there wasn't ONE less than £300 Shock - NO WAY would I pay £300 for a dress she would wear for a couple of hours. They weren't even nice - it looked like Lily Savages dressing room!

I'm hoping to get married next year and will use the same seller - it was overall a very positive experience, despite the nail biting wait.

Rhubarbgarden · 05/04/2012 12:48

[Grin] Black and White cat avatar? When I saw your username that's what popped into my head, and I was thinking 'why am I seeing a black and white cat? Then I thought wedding dresses, and it clicked! Hah!

nitrox · 05/04/2012 12:59

OP - Just for reference, import tax on the dress for £108 (based on a guestimate £15 for delivery), would be £27.

You can check the import duty for any item here:

I'm a total tom-boy and even I think it's so pretty Smile

emsyj · 05/04/2012 13:21

Yes - that's my mog, Leo. He's so handsome! I wish we had avatars on here ...

Which one were you? Did you have Rhubarb in your user name? Are you a teacher??? Is it you who had the Candy Anthony with the floral print...?

ViviPru · 05/04/2012 13:25

Emsyj, can you recommend a wedding forum that's more rockmywedding/rocknrollbride/WhimsicalWonderlandWeddings and less bogstandard trad & tickers please? All the forums I've found seem to be so netmums. TIA

Rhubarbgarden · 05/04/2012 13:27

I was just 'Rhubarb' there - smaller place! Stick of rhubarb for my avatar (totally agree we should have them here!) I'm not a teacher, I did have a floral dress but it was Claire Pettibone not Candy Anthony. I think we had babies at the same time and were on the same You and Your Baby thread. Eeh, it's a small cyberworld! Grin

emsyj · 05/04/2012 13:27

Hmmmm dunno really - I only ever used YAYW, although I think Offbeat Bride might be less 'itsurdayhunhugslolxxx' - I've never been on it but I have seen it mentioned by lots of the 'unconventional' brides on YAYW. here

ViviPru · 05/04/2012 13:28

Cool, thanks, that looks a bit more the ticket!

emsyj · 05/04/2012 13:29

AAAAAAAAAAAAH I KNOW YOU NOW!!!!! It was you with the AMAZING flowers, wasn't it? Did you have a floral headdress? I know you had some sort of unusual floral decoration, can't remember if it was headdress or wrist corsage.

ViviPru · 05/04/2012 13:30

oOOOooooo you have to be approved to post on Offbeat! That appeals to my competitive streak!

nickelhasababy · 05/04/2012 13:32

nickelhasababy · 05/04/2012 13:33

emsyj · 05/04/2012 13:34
