For taking the Titanic story - one with such potential for human interest and drama and turning it into one of the most arse grindingly dull hours of television I have ever had the misfortune to view?

That must take REAL talent.

Is this week's crap then? I watched last week's episode and thought it was cliched nonsense.

SingingSands · 01/04/2012 22:11

I think I agree with you.

I was watching it whilst on the cross trainer and because the remote is missing I was stuck with it.

I guess I thought it would be better, but it was just the usual class wars on a big sinking ship story.

WorraLiberty · 01/04/2012 22:13

You'd think by now, someone would have spotted the fucking iceberg.

ComposHat · 01/04/2012 22:20

A huge crock of steaming shite. Oh yes.

The bit right at the beginning where the dad says "He's a Catholic!" for no other reason than so the son character can do a bit of explaining (I believe it's called Exposition).

It's hard to believe Gosford Park and this (and the 2nd series of Downton Abbey) were written by the same person. Gosford Park is such a subtle peice of writing.

Worra - they had Lost The Binoculars, because There Wasn't Enough Storage Space

OriginalJamie · 01/04/2012 22:39

piece

ChaoticAngel · 01/04/2012 22:42

Grin Worra

I haven't bothered watching it, glad to know I'm not missing anything.

WillowFae · 01/04/2012 23:05

It is just bizzare. I'm a self-confessed Titanic geek (last week I turned to DH and said the baby will survive but the little girl won't just because they said her name and she was the only child in first class not to survive) and am normally fascinated by programmes about it - including dramas. But this is just SOOO dry and weird.

As a narrative it just doesn't work telling different stories each week, each one culminating in the events of that night. Last week especially, it got to the end and I thought, I just don't care about these characters. I don't know them. It was rushed.

And don't even get me started on the poor little rich girl in 1st Class who is rebelling and miserable. Oh look, she found love. Her parents won't approve. Yep, Jack and Rose mark II.

I'll watch the rest, just because it's Titanic and I will admit to being interested in how they are going to play it out in the final episode with the different story lines from each week coming together (yes I know how it will literally play out - sinks - I'm talking about from a narrative point of view). But I'll stick with my planned visit to the cinema next week to 'enjoy' (not really the right word, but you know what I mean) the story.

OriginalJamie · 01/04/2012 23:07

Willow - yes, it's the fact that I don't really care which is the glaring failure, so far

GetOrfMoiiLand · 01/04/2012 23:10

Gosford Park was so clever. This - just isn't.

Chirpychick2010 · 01/04/2012 23:16

Oh dear! I half watched last weeks but it didn't seem any good but thought id watch this week as maybe last was a warm up! haha shall not bother now!!! so thanks as my spare time is precious Grin

NarkedPuffin · 02/04/2012 01:24

I actually though Gosford Park was seriously over-rated - style over substance.

uruculager · 02/04/2012 02:32

Julian Fellowes makes my skin crawl and I can't take any of his work seriously as a result, not even Downton Abbey.

CovMum · 02/04/2012 09:44

I agree I am also a Titanic obsessive but this is crap. I loved Downton but am very disappointed with this. I have been looking forward to it for ages.

Methe · 02/04/2012 09:48

I managed half of last weeks one while in hospital and it was so brain numbingly shit I turned it off and decided to stare at my stitches instead.

lollilou · 02/04/2012 13:06

God yes. I was really looking forward to this but it is rubbish. I especially hate the random bits thrown in like the binoculars, the nunmber of lifeboats and how awful Molly Brown is it just goes on and on. Would the posh boy really have snogged the posh girl in front of her parents?

SuePurblybilt · 02/04/2012 13:10

I wanted to like Gosford more than I did - but it was pretty. Ditto Downton - I'm aware it's shite but I love it.

I couldn't manage more than 20 minutes of last week's Titanic, was this week's as bad? Blimey.

Grin at Methe's version of naval gazing.

DogEared · 02/04/2012 13:13

I also think Gosford Park was drivel. Titanic takes the Biscuit though. James Cameron should sue.

squoosh · 02/04/2012 13:57

Jullian Fellowes is Percy Pig.

A posh rarebreed Hugh Fearnely Whittingstall type of pig of course.

Greythorne · 02/04/2012 14:03

He is a one trick pony.

Downton Series 1 was fine. Good story arc, good clichéed characters, nice tension between upstairs and down.

But Downton season 2 was SO OBVIOUSLY rushed out on the back of the success of S1....storyline was appallingly shite (the [possibly] long lost cousin who just waltzed off, never to be heard from again????), the totally tensionless 'romance' between the driver and Sybil???)

I think he is cashing in on having this 'inside knowledge' of the upper classes, but the joke is wearing thin.

Another Titanic Geek here. Drownton is so slow and I don't care about the characters. Bring back Kate & Leo.

CountryMouse27 · 02/04/2012 15:48

I loved the special lines like;

"I'm sacked? but my mother was so excted about me being on the ship"..."I'm sure she'll forgive us eventually"

For those who missed it, just think of every cliche you can about a ship that sank, "but she's unsinkable", "but we're miles from the ice fields", etc etc, and there you go, you're up to date.

If it was a colour it would be beige.

OriginalJamie · 02/04/2012 15:50

Country - yes - We laughed at that, too

And losing the binoculars dues to lack of storage space was a favourite, too.

WillowFae · 02/04/2012 15:56

And keeping her jewels under her pillow saying that her maid can give them to the purser in the morning.

Oh and steerage won't be that bad because it is Titanic!!

A good drinking game - each time any reference is made to the fact that it is going to sink and characters are going to die.
