use by 29th.
there is nothing wrong with it, and dh will just throw it away if he sees it

he drives me insane with this, no leeway at all, just gets thrown out.

I've just stuck a ham joint in the oven that was use by 29th March.
I work on the principle that if DH doesn't know he can't worry about it.
I wouldn't cook anything that was obviously off but I don't look at use by dates as being the law (unlike DH)

Definitely do it. He would drive me insane too.

Did I read somewhere that they're changing it, so use by dates are getting dropped?

thegreylady · 30/03/2012 18:21

As long as it is naice ham it will be fine :-)

BareBums · 30/03/2012 18:25

So long as it hasn't started to change into fluorescent oily colours.... and smell...bad...

blubberyboo · 30/03/2012 18:27

rip it off...and get the joint in the oven...it would be awful to waste it
those cost a fortune

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 30/03/2012 18:30

The only use by dates I would adhere to is for fish and seafood. YANBU.

DamnBamboo · 30/03/2012 18:34

Best before dates are getting dropped, not use by.

If there is just one date label you should pay attention to, it's the use by one. The use by date allows for a window of error, so it will be dated prior to it actually going off and manufactureres/retailers use it to cover themselves, which is why you often get a little more time beyond the use by date. Sometimes, you don't, the use by date will pass and the day after it can be off. It has happened to me, although not often.

The best before means literally that, and sell by means nothing, it's just for stock control.

Yes I am conversant with EU labelling law a geek

Yabu, I wouldn't want to eat meat after its use by date.
