fecking homeopathy

Dh is a homeopathy nut. Little bloody sugar pills doled out left and right to the kids for this and that. I am a homeopathy 'non believer', but I see these pills as being so ineffective as to be completely harmless so I don't bother too much. However when our youngest had scarlet fever, I had to draw the line and out came the antibiotics.

That was ok, as I have equal say in how the kids are treated. However....

Dh has a recurrent problem. An abscess on his, er, posterior. He has had this before and left it untreated (sorry, he treated it with homeopathic remedies) and eventually I think he burst the bloody thing himself. Anyway, the whole process was painful for all involved, excrutiating for him actually, and lasted over two weeks.

It's back, this abscess. And this time it's making him ill. He's lying in bed, clearly in a lot of pain, but refusing to let me take him to the docs for some antibiotics and to discuss surgery. I've looked into the implications of these things and the complications are pretty nasty. One thing my research has turned up is that that they will keep coming back, they never go away unless surgically dealt with. He says that this is out of the question, he will treat it himself.

My point is this: It's his life and his body, BUT, We have a struggling business, 3 kids, I have a busy job and am self employed so don't get paid for time off. I think he is being selfish by allowing himself to suffer and putting himself out of action unnecessarily. He could go and get some drugs, get on a list for surgery, and be rid of the problem for good and we could all get on with it. As it stands, I have an out of action dh who is not attending to a business that is struggling to make ends meet, and 3 kids and a job to cope with all because he won't go to a fucking proper doctor.

Am I being unreasonable?

I soldiered on when this happened to me. Was then operated on at four in the morning because it had become so dangerous. Septecemia is not funny. Tell him.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/03/2012 09:26

Do any of those sugar pills contain something that boost common sense as your DH seems to be lacking it.

I am not going to express my views on homeopathy because this could become a very very long post!

He needs conventional medicine now. Tell him he needs specific targeted intervention but can use the homeopathy holistically to assist with the ongoing healing process and to boost his immune system and he can share it with the fairies at the bottom of the garden

queenrollo · 27/03/2012 10:08

if this is a perianal abscess then yes he needs to get it surgically dealt with.

My ex had this, and he ignored it for ages trying to treat it with salt baths. Eventually the pain was too much even for him and off he toddled to the GP. He was referred immediately and had surgery. Not pleasant and neither was the aftermath with regular visits from the District Nurse until the wound healed (i'm trying to be delicate here, it's too early for TMI)
One of the things that was discussed before surgery however is that these abscesses grow inwards and he was warned that worse case scenario could see him having bowel surgery too as it can form adhesions. Luckily he'd gone just before that happened but the surgeon said it was a close thing.

They are also something that you are prone to and surgery does not resolve this problem forever. Ex has had it once more several years after surgery, and went straight to the GP but even with heavy duty anti-b's he still ended up in agony for over a week, with the threat of surgery if it didn't 'resolve' itself.

Tell your DH from me to stop fannying about with homeopathy (and I am a strong believer and user of complimentary medicine), and get this dealt with surgically, or it could turn out to be something much worse than just a painful abscess.

valiumredhead · 27/03/2012 10:15

Tell him if he went to an NHS homeopathic hospital - and there are such places, they would give him something for the pain and send him right out to see a doctor!

mousymouseafraidofdogs · 27/03/2012 10:24

he is silly and putting himself in real danger.
in a few hours you might have to call an ambulance...

my allergic asthma as child was not treated treated with homeopathy which has left me with permanent lung damange (scaring).

noblegiraffe · 27/03/2012 10:57

So he's not just for homeopathy but also against proper conventional medicine? Does he never take medicine like aspirin or paracetamol?

If he's nervous of evidence-based medicine, you need to ask him why and then tell him to stop being so daft

bruxeur · 27/03/2012 13:09
that is pretty much spot on. Including the pub debrief.
SpringHeeledJack · 27/03/2012 13:14

arf

I was thinking of just that

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 27/03/2012 13:24

Get a homeopath to see him - any therapist worth their salt will tell him to see a doctor asap.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 27/03/2012 14:39

Has he agreed?

Smithson6 · 27/03/2012 22:48

I feel your pain OP, mine has been using honey on the boil on his arse for the last fortnight, cant walk and is refusing to go to the doctor. He is currently downstairs quaffing wine and discussing his buboe and homemade remedies with a couple of friends. Bunch of old ladies so they are.

Whatmeworry · 28/03/2012 06:13

Good Lord - public funded quackery ....now that does shock and offend me.....

As to OP's DH you may leave the bastard on the grounds of being an arse about his arse

Ok he does need to go to a doc, the big eejet. All the possible horrible side effects have been mentioned.

But can I just say using Honey on wounds is a very good thing. A lot of research has gone in to this. Look up Dr Peter Molan. But once the wound has gone to a certain depth/ level of infection you need antibiotics too.

But I can never understand why people don't just go to the bloody doctors…yea getting an appointment is a pain in the arse but so is a great big boil.Angry

Whatmeworry · 28/03/2012 07:20

But I can never understand why people don't just go to the bloody doctors?yea getting an appointment is a pain in the arse

The latter answers the former :)

It pisses me off though, I've lived in quite a few countries and getting to see a doctor in the UK is by far the worst experience.

caron1968 · 28/03/2012 09:21

What do you call alternative medicine that works? Medicine

BagofHolly · 28/03/2012 10:12

Tell him he will end up on TimeTeam. They always find a skeleton and examine it and then conclude that they died of an untreated abscess.

Piece to camera:
"See Tony, they didn't have the benefit of our antih be otics, and look, he's got more than the usual number of holes in his arse. Terrible."

That's where he and his abscess will end up. Future TimeTeam.

Now then, have you got any pus pictures? Shame to waste it...

Stratters · 02/04/2012 15:50

Bumping for an update. Grin

OriginalJamie · 02/04/2012 15:54

bruxeur

was going to post that as well .....

bronze · 02/04/2012 15:56

Surely if you believe in homeopathy the biggest thing you will be treating yourself with is other peoples urine. Good luck op

OriginalJamie · 02/04/2012 15:58

OP - this sounds horrible. Hope he has seen sense.

Calamityboo · 02/04/2012 16:25

Erm, hello? Op where are you? How's the DH? Has he had his arse lanced yet? Did it make his arse fall off? Is he ok?
