To have pressed the wrong button (once) and now have to pay over 100

I pressed the wrong button when Microsoft word asked me a question today. I now have lost an important document. Apart from hitting myself and saying to the mirror "back up everything" 1000 times. is it unreasonable to expect a second chance from technology -

I'm guessing it was "do you want to save?" or "do you want the autorecover?"
surely you must have saved it along the way?
or did you overwrite it with an oldr version accidentally?

Can I suggest using free software such as SugarSync or SyncToy?

Overwritten by old document with same name. What a total plonker! Apparently it may be recoverable from previous saves. I just wish there was a way of telling your computer " this document is important and I am stupid/distracted"
